Well ,this is a bit much for enjoying a victory, no? Per Sports Illustrated...
quote:

Picture this potential scenario in the Southeastern Conference this fall: On Sept. 30 in Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn takes down undefeated, No. 1–ranked, two-time reigning national champion Georgia. Tigers fans celebrate their first victory over the rival Bulldogs since 2017 by storming the field.

And in response, the SEC moves Auburn’s next home game against Georgia, in 2025, to Athens. The Tigers would play the Bulldogs between the hedges three straight seasons, 2024 to ’26. That would be the price for storming the field.

Sound like a draconian penalty for something that has been part of the fabric of college sports for decades? Well, it’s on the table as a possible sanction as the SEC searches for a stronger deterrent to field storming than six-figure fines.
A conference working group on event safety was appointed by commissioner Greg Sankey last November—less than three weeks after Tennessee fans tore down the goalposts following a victory over Alabama and just a day before LSU fans flooded the Tiger Stadium field to revel in an upset of the Crimson Tide. The working group, headed by Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne, Georgia AD Josh Brooks and Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart, has been gathering input and weighing options for several months.

The premise of losing a future SEC home game is just one of the policy changes that has been discussed by the working group. An even more drastic one—forfeiture of the game in which the field storm occurred—is unlikely to gain much traction. But there is general agreement that something more needs to be done beyond hitting schools in their fat wallets.

taking away a win would get them personal violence -- that's crazy

LSU loses to Texas and OU next?

Whoever suggested this alternative needs to be banned from working in the SEC.

The SEC supposedly "means more" so the fans are supposed to 'golf clap'? No way in hell they ain't hitting the field after a "Kick Six"

The kind of garbage you get when you let a Yankee run the SEC.

This is ridiculous. Why does the SEC even have a say over this? And what is the school supposed to even do about it? Put up electric fences? Why is the team penalized for something the fans did? Makes no sense.

I would guess because when people sue, they sue EVERYONE. If someone gets hurt or worse during one of these, you can guarantee that the SEC will be named in a lawsuit.

I don't know of any stadium anywhere that could stop thousands of people from storming the field. Imagine if Saints fans stormed the field for the "no call" pass interference. How would you stop it.

Easy. Shoot the first person onto the field.

Maybe we need to send SEC officials to Latin America for training at soccer games where they take out a ref. Literally "take out the ref". Maybe they would allow some celebration.

Here come a bunch of downvotes, but...inform the fans towards the end of the game that if the field is rushed, student tickets will be sold to the general public and all general public tickets will have a $100/game surcharge added to next season's package. Have the fans help police this by going after their pocketbooks directly.

How many people actually get injured storming the field? Is the SEC facing millions in potential payouts? I just don't get why this is such an issue.
user avatar
PeleofAnalytics25 months
I think back in the 80s some student got some massive head injury at an Ivy league game from a goal post. Almost died on the field. Had some real neurological issues. I would bet if it happened today, they'd bee looking at millions in damages easily.

There's also waivers on almost all tickets for almost all events for injuries while attending, and I'm sure schools could get out especially if someone was doing something they shouldn't be.

Exculpatory clauses like wording on the back of a ticket have different levels of enforceability across states. I am pretty sure Louisiana makes them extremely hard to enforce. I think the wording is there in a lot of cases because it doesn’t hurt to have it there and might encourage a few people to be a little more careful.

I do believe a Free Speech problem could be argued regarding the SEC's unwillingness to allow expression.

Dude, the first amendment only applies to governmental action. The SEC is not the government or even an educational institution. It's simply a non-profit that administers the sports of its members.

Many UF fans rushed or attempted to rush the field in 97, after beating FSU. Even Spurrier tugged at the goalpost in jest.

Florida and Bama is right. POTUS2024 is spewing lies. Florida has never rushed the field, period.

This idiotic is easily solved: All schools rush the field for consecutive weeks. Can’t punish everybody!

Just print on the back of the ticket...Bearer agrees to indemnify the contestants, institutions or anyone in official capacity should injury occur while entering, occupying or exiting the playing field.

If it was that easy, they would have done it already. Liability disclaimers are rarely worth the paper they are printed on.
