Very likely has to do with the federal consent decree the city was under for the better part of the last decade. When the DOJ comes in with the hammer, the state sometimes is handed some appointments the city normally would have.

I think if you teach your kids to avoid being around gangs, drug dealers, and late night rap concerts, they should be able to avoid about 99%+ chances of being murdered.

If your kids haven't left the house with those lessons, might be a bit on mom and dad.

The whole LA inventory tax system needs to be nuked. It's just a completely unnecessary bureaucratic circle jerk. Any tax you pay to a municipality just gets credited on your LA income tax return so you effectively pay nothing. Other than the fact that it is nonrefundable for corps, it is just a way to that the state indirectly fund local governments. The businesses are just middle men and have to fill out the paperwork. Why not just have the state directly subsidize local jurisdictions instead of putting businesses in the middle of a bunch of red tape?

And Local governments will absolutely not get rid of inventory taxes even if given the option because 1) all business owners know they will just get it back so they care little about it 2) and it is basically free funding from the state and the municipality gets to basically write their own check.

Hard to compare. We didn't have the technology in the 90s we have today. DNA and surveillance back then was negligible compared to 2026. The crime today should be exponentially lower than it was then but thanks to the culture of coddling criminals and liberal prosecutors/judges, we have not made the type of progress we should have made. If the criminals of the 90s had to deal with the judges/prosecutors of the 90s and the technology of today, there is no way the crime wave of the 90s would have been that bad. They would have been a lot more scared of being caught than they were.
