Apparently it was in support of Fields coming in the game.

Pretty wild and unfortunate situation though. Be interesting to see if anything comes from it.

According to the tweet in the article, he was yelling, "put that n***** in the game", apparently talking about Fields.

That's not good. I realize that the recruits don't sit close enough to students to hear exactly what they're saying, but I cringe to think that a recruit could hear someone yelling something like that while on a visit.
I wonder what kind of punishment he could potentially face. Sasser was a pretty good player for the baseball team last year. 2nd team all-SEC I think. What an incredibly stupid thing for him to do.

In this day and time and under the current climate on any college campus in America Sasser is toast...

You can't say what he said in public and if he said it, it is wrong and stupid on his part, no excuses...

Don't know if he's evil/racist etc. but he's a dumb frick and not very bright either way. Don't know him so not my place to judge him but many will...

Wish him the best...

Is Evans, Georgia a bit backwards...or is it still about 1918 in this guy's mind instead of 2018?

Kind of off topic but I noticed that in the Facebook message describing the incident, Klarissa says, "IF YOU ARE WHITE YOU CANNOT SAY IT. AT. ALL." If a group of black UGA basketball players was watching the game and one of them yelled, "Put that [N-WORD} in the game!" in reference to Fields, is that okay? Would there be an investigation of the player who yelled it? I'm wondering if the statement above reflects the opinion of the person who wrote the Facebook tweet or if there is actually a race-specific policy about this on campus.

This is the general attitude of people of color with regard to white people using the word. "They" have "taken" a word from "us" that "we" used to exercise power over "them". At least that's how it has always been portrayed to me when that question has come up. I can assure you there is no race-specific policy pertaining to it. That would be a legit cluster-frick.

I'm not sure why it actually matters. The long and short of it... don't be a fricking racist. If a black person calls another black person a derogatory word for a black person... is it really even racist?

You can call your friend dipshit without meaning anything derogatory by it... but call a random drunk at a bar a dipshit and you've potentially got a fight on your hands...

No official policy needed... just a little common sense.

But if we came up with the word we should be able to use it - just saying.

Joking of course, but it is pretty stupid if the person in question did say it.

I still feel like that word only carries the power it does because people allow it to do so. It’s just a damn word.

Had a black psych professor that called out all the black students in class for being hypocrites about that word. Was interesting to say the least but she brought up good points. Still think every white person in the class was like, “Um, nah - still not gonna say it.”

This is the problem with the word. It's either not okay for anyone to say the word or it is okay for everyone to say the word. You cannot have it both ways.

However, as a representative of UGA Athletics, he should know he is held to a higher standard than the general public.

Well that is embarrassing. I would think for the university to save face Sasser will have to go and a formal apology issued.

Way to go you dumb inbred hick.

Exactly. And the current climate in our country is serving to give it power yet again. Becoming inflamed about its use shows us it carries quite a bit of weight, still.

I was asking the question because of the investigation aspect. "Investigation" implies a legal or at least policy aspect of the conduct. Thus if the student athlete who yelled the slur had been black and it came to the attention of the university or got reported to the press, would the guy face disciplinary action? Or is it a given (in university rules of conduct) that a member of a protected class cannot racially insult a member of the same class?

It’s interesting when black folks talk on Facebook and forget they have white friends who can see it. It’s also a strange conversation when you have to explain to your kids that even though a lot of the songs popular with high school/middle schoolers are hip hop/rap whatever that use the N word a lot, that it’s best not to go down a path of logic or understanding as they will be disappointed.

..and then you say it’s used differently, but in a lot of cases it’s used to describe black folks that rappers/performers don’t not like or associate with... so, you just tell your kids to avoid it and not try to make sense of the hypocrisy.. I think it’s time everyone puts that word to bed and we move on... earning respect with our actions.
