It isn't ok by any means but context is important. For all we know they are friends and he said it in a supportive (all be it stupid) way.

Yes. The word is now a trap for people not of color. I know nothing of this kid, but I do know it would be a shame for the hearsay of one person to ruin his college opportunity.

It is used in abundance in music lyrics by people of color that is most definitely not just targeted to one demographic. How does one simply ignore the actual words used in the most mainstream form of music on today's college campus? It is used prolifically in common every day communication among black athletes for certain. The very essence of the words prolific use in common vernacular make it near impossible for it to simply go away. Having words in common use that are ok for some and not for others creates an unnecessary difference if the goal is to treat all people the same.

The word has ugly roots. It is also most definitely a social trap that has been set. The best thing to do with traps is avoid them.

He's almost certainly going to be kicked off the team, but IMO I think that's too stiff and I'm sure I'll get heat for that.

Here's my thing...first of all he's an idiot and should be punished and by no means is what he did "ok". But how many times have we seen athletes steal, fight, drink underage, fail drug tests, and any number of other actual CRIMES and remain on the team? This goes for our football players as well as athletes at other schools. What he did was yell out something profoundly stupid at a football game. He didn't hurt anyone and his actions only even affected anyone else because they were offended by his words. And last I checked offending someone with your words isn't a crime.

Stay away from that kind of language, white people. If black folks talk like that, so what. Just stay away from it. Nothing but trouble and you will never explain your way out of it.

Will he be kicked off the team/university if they can't find any definitive proof, like a video or him just coming clean? If he just denies and his teammates stay quiet then it would be kind of hard to justify taking that extreme of an action. If he did do this then he's a dumbass who probably doesn't deserve to represent the university on the field.

Innocent until proven guilty is supposed to be how we roll, but as you can see from this thread, we dont normally operate like that.

Far be it from me to credit HT, but his response was pretty spot on here:
"If he said that, then he's dumbass."

I would bet that if you asked everyone calling him a dumbass, the statement was made with the expectation of "this statement applies only if he did in fact do this"... Public opinion is not a court of law, and therefore doesn't require the same caveats.

Ultimately, I'm kinda with WG. Is it a no no? Absolutely. Is it "kick him off the team and blackball him bad..." probably not. Unfortunately, we live in the south, and anything shy of kicking him off the team is likely then viewed as overtly racist and no program outside the south would ever act like that... SEC is trash/redneck/hick... blah blah blah.

Double standards of all kinds are fun.

All it takes is a modicum of peripheral awareness to see how deeply indebted we are to the colorfuls. For scrubbing all the smut from our ancestral inventory. Past civilizations have suffered far heavier costs for this type of cleansing than having limitations placed on free speech. if hitler could dunk and used fry baskets instead of ovens, Adolphtavious would have a talk show by now and yall would laugh at all his honkey shaming jokes

Its scribed beneath the sandals of lady liberty "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses". All adolphtavious wants is the obese, acne covered asses of your raunchy female castoffs. In return they want you to bleach a hurtful word from common parlance. would it hurt to show some god damn goodwill and gratitude

I find it hard to believe that no one in this thread has heard going athletes say the n word to each other. I doubt he used the n word the way it's being portrayed.

Regardless...yelling that in the stadium is not the wisest choice.

I bet the players on the sideline yell it all the time.

Honestly I don't think anyone should say it.

But saying black people can say it and white's can't is racism in itself.

To hold one race to a different standard than the other is racism.

At the same time he ought to know in this society we have to walk on glass to appease the politically correct and their hypersensitivity.

It's simple really.

You can refer to yourself as an fool and there is nothing offensive about your comment.

If I should call you a fool, I am committing an offense against you.

People should stay away from offending others gratuitously but self-deprecation is allowed.

I would just like to say a "frick you" to Adam Sasser for making race politics a relevant topic on a football board.

As you were.
