Several of Ala’s are a joke — a sports information guy there in the early 80’s decided to go back and claim dubious “national championships.” Certainly the legitimate # of NCs and SEC championships is impressive w/o the bogus claims.

An updated list using this criteria and using the current opinions of the posters in this thread, an updated list would look something like this

1) Alabama - 16
2) Tennessee - 6
3) Auburn - 4
4) LSU - 4
5) Arkansas - 3
6) Florida - 3
7) Georgia - 3
8) Texas A&M - 3
9) Ole Miss - 2
10) Kentucky - 2
11) Vanderbilt - 2

The only dubious one is 41. A lot of fans of other schools try to throw shade on 64,73 and 78 because we lost the bowl game (64 and 73) and 78 because we lost to USC in the regular season. But again the AP, UPI, or Coaches poll awarded Bama NC. All were credible and recognized services.

I wasn't alive back then, but I am curious to know how AP voters justified their rankings. Due to the lack of games on TV I'm sure they didnt see like 90% of football teams play one single game.

The funny thing is if Alabama used the Massey poll like UCF did, then Alabama would’ve be awarded the 2016 NC even with a loss to Clemson... ND would also have 2012.

Well there lies the problem with some of the NCs awarded in the polling era. Ole Miss should have 1962 and Bama should have 1966, but voters kept them out for political reasons ( look at governors being jackasses).

As much as many disagree, the BCS solved many problems because it gave 3 entities voices instead of one. If folks want to say everything before 1998 is “mythical” then fine, or anything before the poll era is mythical, or even anything before the playoff era is mythical I’m fine with that. But this constant bashing of Alabama’s NC is kinda getting old and stupid since all but 1 are legitimately awarded. Seriously no one questions Miami’s 1983, BYU’s 1984, or Colorado\ GT’s 1990 as much as any of the Bear’s 6 NCs

My issue is Alabama catches shite for the pre-poll era claims, yet nobody does the same for usc or Michigan in particular. Michigan has only 2 titles since 1936 I believe. 2. Yet they claim 11. When people start holding them and others to the same standard they like to hold Bama to, then maybe I'll listen.

Aside from that, all of the poll era titles (aside from the 1941 bullshite) are 100% legit. No team that won an AP/UPI title neglects to claim it. And if we claimed titles like we are accused of, we'd have more than the 17.

1978 was probably awarded to Bama over USC because Charles White's "phantom touchdown" against Michigan in the 1979 Rose Bowl. USC won 17-10. The play occurred in the 2nd quarter, so who knows what the actual outcome would have been.

There was as many as 8 different sources giving out National Championships. Some years there were 8 different ones to claim it. It was the driving force for the BCS championship which every conference and team agreed to! Which is why I have a problem with USC acceptance of the AP trophy when LSU won the BCS championship!

Alabama won the AP and UPI/Coaches polls.

They literaly changed the format of the AP poll to be after the bowl game specifically because Bama lost in their bowl game. To not acknowledge the Hogs as national champions in 1964 is to have your head so far stuck up your own arse that you are literaly eating your own shite. You are a human rollie pollie.

If you count UK's in 1951 you have to count Arky's for 64
