re: Why not Nebraska?

Yep. Lived in Nebraska for 6 years and all of the Nebraska fans thought the would rule the BIG 10. At the CWS the year that they joined the BIG 10 they had a bunch of Beer Gardens and bars rewarding BIG 10 championship tickets off as door prizes.

Nebraska and their fans think they are a top 10 program and can push people around. The reason that they are in the BIG 10 is because they couldn’t stomach Mizzou getting to go to the BIG 10 over them.

Screw Nebraska. I hope they rot forever

The Vols are suffering for mostly the same reasons Nebraska is suffering. The lack of great in state recruiting and being surrounded by a bunch of teams with great instate recruiting. They require an ace national recruiter with a competent staff. But even then it is unlikely they have a decade of great success even under those circumstances. It would probably require Georgia, Florida, and Alabama being down all at the same time. Really 1998 was a magical year where they had Alabama and Georgia both down and Florida in a huge rebuilding process.

They probably blew their best chances at a really successful season (Sugar Bowl/SECCG) in 2015 and 2016.
Georgia is missing a modern quarterback. It wouldn’t matter if they hired Kiffin, Sark, or Brady they would still lose to a high powered offense without a competent passer. Alabama found this out in 2016 and much of 2017. Had they had Justin Fields last Saturday they would’ve probably won. I have no idea If JT Daniels is much better than Bennett, but if he is not then he will probably suffer the same thing vs Bama that Bennett did.

FTR yes I know Jalen got better in year 3 and 4 of his college career, but when Clemson, Auburn, and Georgia totally shut down the run in 16 and 17 he was a total liability.

I think there were rumors that Cristobal is interested in him at Oregon.

They tried to get a Top 5 matchup but too many folks wanted that big bowl deal, that includes Oklahoma.

FWIW bowl Tie ins don’t mean a team has to accept a deal, only that the conference has to provide a worthy team. Hell Bama played ND in the Orange bowl in 1974 instead of the Sugar bowl.
From 04-present Bama was eligible to be in consideration for a national championship.

1993 Auburn was not allowed to be considered to being a major Poll national champion.

Two different things.
Nah try again. They were offered an opportunity to play in the holiday bowl, but Switzer chose to go to Orange Bowl.

Holiday bowl extended offers to both Washington and Oklahoma that year. Bowl tieins have been ignored before.
1993 Auburn couldn’t even be on TV because Pat Dye tried to keep “it on down home” with multiple sports. Auburn was banned from the postseason and with that banned from NC consideration.

2009 Bama served their postseason ban in 02 and 03 but sanctions remained.

Different set of circumstances
1984 BYU got most of their claim because they beat #3 Pittsburgh (at the time), and because Oklahoma and Washington ducked at playing them in the bowls. BYU could only play in the Holiday Bowl and OU and Washington were both given the option to taking a huge bowl reward loss to play BYU in the Holiday but chose to play each other in a top 5 matchup in the Orange Bowl. I seriously doubt anyone would blame Washington or OU without knowing pollsters would do them dirty like they did.

It just goes to show you how stupid the Poll era was in that pollsters had too much power with their biases. If folks want to say everything before 98 is mythical championships then I’m okay with it based on situations like that, and if someone believes there is a legitimate claim for their team to claim one then I’m fine with that also. But it doesn’t diminish the fact that major polling services legitimately rewarding National Championships based on the criteria of the day. This also doesn’t mean that teams on postseason bans after 1964 deserve a legitimate claim to one.
What Alabama title did they claim under probation?

If you are saying 09 then yes ON RECRUITING PROBATION, but that wasn’t on BOWL and POSTSEASON BAN. Both 1984 Florida and 1993 Auburn were on postseason bans and weren’t eligible for primary poll National Championships. Big difference.

Then you get into the Boise and Utah non claims.

Personally I think the most BS claim of all time never gets talked about.... BYU 1984. I think most people are too fixated on devaluing Bear Bryant’s success... okay Nick Saban and Alabama still is owning everyone even if you only give Bear 3 NCs with this revisionist crusade of awarding and nixing nc claims.
I’ve said many times that I wish we wouldn’t claim 1941. If we were to claim a 40’s championship it should be 1945, but I think it would look worse because Army claims it.

But 1984 Florida, 1993 Auburn, and 2012 Ohio St were all on probation. Alabama doesn’t claim 2002 as SECW champs because we were on probation... and we aren’t Ole Miss.

Even if we start at the BCS

Alabama 5
TOSU 2
FSU 2
Florida 2
LSU 2
A lot at 1
It’s funny that Georgia Tech has more legitimate claims than Georgia
Auburn and Florida claiming 84 and 93 would be like Ohio State claiming 2012.
If Auburn wants to claim 2004 or 1983 I’m sure most Bama fans wouldn’t whine about it because we know they were screwed in both cases.

But Auburn will never claim 2004 because they would owe Tubberville a crap ton of money if they did.
Well the 1973 ND game was basically for the AP National Championship so I think it meant way more.

But why is it relevant?

The biggest problem with the Poll era is that it rarely matched #1 vs #2 against each other. I mean hell, only 3 out the 6 national championship bouts Miami played in the 80’s and 90’s matched #1 vs #2 and they went 1-2 in them. And Miami won every national on their run in the 80’s and 90’s except for 1 was in the Orange Bowl ( their home stadium), but no one whines about it. No one ever questions the legitimacy of Miami’s titles until the 2000’s.
Well there lies the problem with some of the NCs awarded in the polling era. Ole Miss should have 1962 and Bama should have 1966, but voters kept them out for political reasons ( look at governors being jackasses).

As much as many disagree, the BCS solved many problems because it gave 3 entities voices instead of one. If folks want to say everything before 1998 is “mythical” then fine, or anything before the poll era is mythical, or even anything before the playoff era is mythical I’m fine with that. But this constant bashing of Alabama’s NC is kinda getting old and stupid since all but 1 are legitimately awarded. Seriously no one questions Miami’s 1983, BYU’s 1984, or Colorado\ GT’s 1990 as much as any of the Bear’s 6 NCs
The funny thing is if Alabama used the Massey poll like UCF did, then Alabama would’ve be awarded the 2016 NC even with a loss to Clemson... ND would also have 2012.
The only dubious one is 41. A lot of fans of other schools try to throw shade on 64,73 and 78 because we lost the bowl game (64 and 73) and 78 because we lost to USC in the regular season. But again the AP, UPI, or Coaches poll awarded Bama NC. All were credible and recognized services.

Well you have Notre Dame to thank for that.

Revisionist thinking doesn’t change the fact NCs were awarded pre bowl season back then because Notre Dame was too good to play in bowl games from 1926-1970.
