It is fricking bullshite that Alabama claims this BS title and mocks Arkansas for claiming it. This should be a unanimous Arkansas title because they were the only undefeated team in college football

Alabama just doesn’t claim it. It was awarded both major polls, numbnuts.

Except that the polls voted for the National Champ before the bowl games in 1964. The poll voters, like most people then, viewed the bowls as exhibition games.

The UP changed after 1964 and started voting the NC after the bowl games. I believe the UPI continued voting before the bowls until around 1974-75.

Georgia and Kentucky, on the other hand, are routinely awarded Nattys in '42 and '51, respectively, that are based solely on computer rankings from decades after those seasons ended

Good lord this is so far from the truth I don’t know where to begin.

Dawgs in 42 were selected by 6 major selectors. And could claim 3 more if counting like Bama.

Sit down little one.

A&M claims 3 national championships but has 6 undefeated seasons.

One of the seasons we DON'T claim, we allowed 0 points on the year.

64 is recognized

77 isn’t. Probably because that was 1 computer based system in the 70s. Looks like they care about AP, coaches, BCS, CFP and FWAA

See my criteria above in this thread. Did they celebrate said NC at the end of the 1960 season? Do they have the traditional items awarded for a NC, that were awarded at the end of that season? What did the regional and national newspapers say at the time?

In fairness, some have tried to award the 1908 NC to LSU. Who has 110-year old hardware for that NC? It's Penn. Who were the papers talking about as NC back then? Penn.

Kentucky has a season like that too. Nicknamed "The immortals" IIRC. No Natty for them though

OF COURSE, dude. It's as valid as many of these others. Also, count 1909.

The only BS Bama NC is 1941, all others are either are major polling services, BCS/CFP, or Rose Bowls. I would say 16 is correct even though Bama could claim more.

If Arkansas wants to claim 64 or Auburn wants to claim 83 then have at it.

Well you have Notre Dame to thank for that.

Revisionist thinking doesn’t change the fact NCs were awarded pre bowl season back then because Notre Dame was too good to play in bowl games from 1926-1970.

So UCF has basically positioned themselves for a valid claim in the future.

An updated list using this criteria and using the current opinions of the posters in this thread, an updated list would look something like this

1) Alabama - 16
2) Tennessee - 6
3) Auburn - 4
4) LSU - 4
5) Arkansas - 3
6) Florida - 3
7) Georgia - 3
8) Texas A&M - 3
9) Ole Miss - 2
10) Kentucky - 2
11) Vanderbilt - 2
