Good God that is painful. Over half of those aren't top 20, especially Durham. Chapel Hill is incredible but Durham is shite.

I've been to all of those minus College Station. I'll take CoMo over any of those (minus how douchey the majority of the campus dresses and talks) except Gainesville. CoMo really is a pretty cool place.

Rose Bowl is in Pasadena--not Los Angeles.
pasadena is an incorporated city in the county of los angeles, just like beverly hills, west hollywood, burbank and glendale. nobody in those cities denies that they live in los angeles. for all intents and purposes, the rose bowl is in LA.

It's so cute that Spaulding actually thinks the Alabama student body is a bunch of country yokels. If anything, Bama is simply a larger version of Ole Miss. A campus full of preppy frat stars and sorostitutes that think college is all about spending daddy's money.

I'll take every SEC school for 500, Alex.

List is awful.
LA not a college town
Austin is not a college town
4 SEC schools listed and none are Athens.
Gainesville is awful
T-town and Knoxville are ok but not top 10.
Iowa city is awful
Durham is awful
Too much cultish rapey shite to list State College.
Madison is honestly the only one that 100% belongs in the top 10.

No Charlottesville, no Athens, not legit.
That really is the worst list ever. They should have put College Park, MD as tied for 10th with Durham to make it the ultimate shite sandwich.

t's home to 2 of the greatest athletic departments in college sports history
Meh. They're great but then so too has been Stanford, Florida, Michigan, Georgia, LSU, etc. Not saying much with that.

its also the home of the Rose Bowl(the stadium which is generally regarded as the greatest venue for a football game and the grandaddy of all the bowl games).
It's actually a piss poor venue by modern standards and it smells like arse. The only thing going for it is the extensive history. Otherwise, it's largely outclassed (it's the Wrigley Field of football stadiums).

but no, los angeles is not a "college town" in the traditional use of the term.
LA isn't a town at all

In fairness, the OP misrepresented the list, which is simply "College football's 10 best sports towns," and, in the text, "college sports towns." Neither of those are the same as "college town." They're just listing the 10 best towns for college sports.
In equal fairness, the OP is entirely correct about how much the list sucks. Seriously. Just including the icon of college sports apathy L.A. pretty much confirms the writer didn't actually experience most of these (I suspect he is a Big 10 fan who attended away games at his particular university, because Madison and Iowa City sound like the choices of someone desperate to add strange personal preferences.)
Also, most of Durham is a hellhole -- I used to commute there and you absolutely do not want to leave the relatively small section of Durham that could be considered 'nice.' It certainly isn't a great sports town. Chapel Hill, as some have already mentioned, is a much better place to enjoy college sports. I won't comment on the SEC choices except to say that the Athens people have a right to roll their eyes, and that I'm not seeing Gainesville beating out many other SEC venues except on very specific game days like UGA or other Florida schools. No insult intended, just saying UF doesn't really have the best college football atmosphere outside of those instances, at least when compared to the hyper-enthusiasm of certain other SEC football fans on most any game day.

If Athens, OH isnt on this list then its not legit. Athens is the epitome of "college town"!!

Now you're just being silly. I haven't been to too many campuses, but Mizzou's campus is beautiful. The area out around the stadium is not, but the central campus is.

This Might Be The Worst Top 10 College Towns List Of All Time

Only 2 or 3 of those have been mentioned in song or had a song named after it or in the title.
Baton Rouge has been mentioned in many. 'Callin' Bston Rouge', Me and Bobby McGee, Heart of Rock 'n Roll, among numerous others. The LSU campus and surrounding Tigertown are incredible for tailgating snd sight seeing.
Baton Rouge is also known for the largest Water Park in the south, Hot Air Balloon competitions, and several beautiful golf parks and municipal parks.
[quote]
I'm just as much an LSU homer as the next guy, but c'mon man, Baton Rouge isn't a very good "college town"...We still have the best tailgate in football though
I totally disagree. First of all, Baton Rouge """""""IS"""""" a college town.
Though it has a metro population of over 500,000, the campus and surrounding areas parts of Baton Rouge DO exhibit a college town atmosphere.
I would approximate the Baton Rouge campus area college town atompshere as just as good or better than most of these on the list; especially
Knoxville, Gainesville, Iowa City, Tuscaloosa, and State College.
And Austin, Durham, LA, and Madison are all BIGGER than Baton Rouge also. How can THEY be classified as "college towns" and not Baton Rouge
?????
