Athens ga should be tops.

Austin tx is more city than town. A lot of out of state transplants that don't care if Texas is having a rough season. But are total sycophants if Texas wins 10+. To me that should disqualify them for any positive ranking.

Tuscaloosa as a town has made great strides over the past 10 years. Will continue to do so. I have long said that Tuscaloosa was held at a disadvantage from Bama playing all of their big games in Birmingham.

I fear this is the same type list we will see from the "selection" committee regarding the playoff rankings.

If a city doesn't have at least 10% of its population from students (preferably at least 20%) it isn't really a college town.

LA is of course the biggest joke. If you want to pick a big city college town Boston is a better choice, at least it has some feel of a college town whereas LA doesn't at all.

Austin is a great city but it isn't a college town.

I don't know how Durham, Tuscaloosa, or Iowa City could make a list. The rest at least qualify even if Gainesville and Columbia are debatable choices. Oxford and Athens should always make these lists. College Station has a strong argument. Ann Arbor isn't a bad choice. Charlottesville isn't a bad choice. Auburn is a better choice than Tuscaloosa. Clemson isn't a bad choice.

this is actually pretty true. Most of the UT kids I've met here this summer are out of state and lack school pride. Definitely pro sports first, but I guess that's what Mack Brown will do to you.

They honestly didn't even know their baseball team had such an illustrious history. they watched UT in the tournament, but it was all bandwagon

eta: I made the Austin and Baton Rouge connection as they both host major universities and are the capital of their state. Although Austin is a far superior city, my point was that Gainesville makes Baton Rouge seem like a really cool city

lol at CS making the list.

TTown has a strong argument for the list based on your suggestions.

Auburn is better than CS. but all of this is based on personal preferences.

regarding Tuscaloosa... If you consider just Universtiy area / downtown / lake tuscaloosa then TTown is a great place with alot more potential. But if you factor in South-southwest Ttown then no it is not top 10.

a city is a college town if the university is one of the top things you associate with it. austin is a college town. la and seattle are not. berkeley and tempe are even though they're suburbs of sf and phoenix.

its also the home of the Rose Bowl(the stadium which is generally regarded as the greatest venue for a football game and the grandaddy of all the bowl games).

It's actually a piss poor venue by modern standards and it smells like arse. The only thing going for it is the extensive history. Otherwise, it's largely outclassed (it's the Wrigley Field of football stadiums).

notice i said its regarded as the greatest venue, not greatest stadium. you are right, the rose bowl is a shite hole, even worse than the coliseum. but the backdrop of the mountain ranges coupled with the history of the stadium make it one of the greatest sporting venues in america, and thats not debatable.

The only three I agree with are LA, Iowa City, and Austin

LA is NOT a college town. Yes, there are colleges and universities in LA, but it is NOT a college town.

The top 10 list should always include:

Ann Arbor - Univ. of Michigan
Madison - Univ. Wisconsin
Athens - UGA
Oxford - Ole Miss
Boulder - CU
Charlottesville - UVA
Chapel Hill - UNC

After that...who knows.

Maybe Eguene, Oregon. Athens, Ohio. Austin, Texas.

What's the criteria? 1 person's opinion based on 0% fact. Meh.

Forkbeard is correct sir.

I know Austin is kinda large for a college town, but I would include it as well.

I wouldn't, not necessarily because it is too large, but because there are so many other things happening in Austin that may or may NOT be associated w/ UT, for example state capitols tend to draw some business on that merit alone. My first trip to Austin was a social call back when a show called Austin City Limits was a still relatively unknown entity outside of the state of Texas. Saw Tom Waits perform. Now Austin is a huge business center for companys like ATT and Texas Instruments.

It's interesting to think of LA as a college town, among the first things I associate w/ LA is the Brooklyn Dodgers, Hollywood and USC/UCLA. But I would agree it just isn't a college town, regardless of the association. Neither are Austin or Baton Rouge which are considerably smaller though.

One thing about Austin and U. Of Texas is clear to me now though. They would fit in well in the SEC, if only because or their attitude, ie "we're the best, fuk the rest". Exactly the attitude most of you have. Very sad really, so many heavily biased and uninformed fans, but really not unexpected.

The author says it best:
quote:

First, let me ask how is Los Angeles included as one of the 10 best? And how are College Station (Texas A&M), Baton Rouge (LSU), Oxford (Ole Miss) and Athens (Georgia) left off?

And those of you who describe Austin as a "college town" have never been.
Austin is a good-sized city, with the majority of its residents having zero ties whatsoever to UTex.
