I think the P5 conferences are going to have to work together to change the overall structure of the scheduling for the season, reducing OOC games, and expanding to maybe 16 teams, maybe with some play-in games.

I don’t buy the arguments that this would make the regular season meaningless. Everybody knows Duke is going to make the playoffs in basketball, that doesn’t mean that they don’t want to win their conference. And, of course, seeding matters a great deal.

A big playoff will make the regular season pointless. You will know 75% of the field before the season begins.

You will have like the entire top 4 with their playoff spots locked up with several weeks left in the season.

Look at how absolutely meaningless and shitty the college basketball season is. Look at the current top 25, pretty much all of those teams are making the tournament. The entire 30 game season is just to determine some seedings for a winner take all tournament, it's absurd.

This.

Say goodbye to exciting regular season games because an expanded playoff would just mean that the only thing on the line would be seeding.

Let's have a night game in Tiger Stadium between Top 4 Alabama & LSU where the only thing on the line is seeding. Sounds awesome!!!

LSU is the school that started the trend of Fournetting bowl games and expanding the playoffs to 8 doesn't save any Tiger players, because they still will only be playing in the TaxBelk bowls.

Expanded playoff won’t change this

I mean look at us Deebo is sitting.
With an expanded playoff we still aren’t in the playoff

I think the larger the playoff the less likely for great OOC regular season matchups too
Other than Rivalry games that are OOC

No one gives a shite about some unknown NC State player or any other dude who sits out a game.
The only thing that will expand the playoffs is money and more money. If the B1G and Pac12 keep getting left out, it may have an impact but it's all about the Benjamins.

Bingo. Pretty much every single top 5 matchup the entire year becomes meaningless because both the winner and loser still make the playoffs. Losing a seeding spot or two is not high stakes.

It's just like all those top 5 basketball matchups, all they determine is who gets 1 seeds and who gets 2 seed, la dee freaking da. Nobody cares.

Ohio State vs. Michigan this year? Who cares, both teams in.

Alabama vs. Auburn in 2013? Who cares, both teams get in.

etc.

I hope so

I'd eliminate 1/2 OOC games, focus more on conference games and championship. That way you can implement a bigger playoff.

9 conference games
1 OOC
1 Conference Championship game
4 round playoff.

First 2 rounds could be a home game for higher ranked team, then semi round and champ round could be "bowl games"

could be expanded more if you eliminate the conference championship game and go CFP top 16

I'm pretty sure LF7 announced he was skipping the bowl game prior to McCaffery s announcement.

[quote]For every one of these problems, there are a litany of explanations and they are as numerous as they are inadequate. Bowl games aren’t interesting. The big programs schedule too many cupcakes. Players are prepping for the NFL Draft and skipping Bowl games. Millennials are too interested in their phones. The younger siblings of Millennials are even worse.

How did that site go from talking about football, to bitching about "the damn kids these days?" It sounds like an old man screaming at kids to stay off their lawn.

Yep there's no real way to force someone to play in their last game

I agree with this but you have to make some changes. #1, get rid of the conference championship games and play quarter finals instead.

I agree. Ohio State and Norte Dame could have played at the Big 10 Championship game for a spot and Oklahoma and Georgia could have played in the Big 12 championship for the other spot.

More playoff games will just kill the regular season. It will kill the strength of schedule argument and kill future scheduling.

This is the gospel truth.

or, scheduling will be a deciding factor on who gets in. LSU screamed up the rankings this year because they were playing ranked teams almost every week. If the playoffs were expanded to say, 12 or 16, they'd be in BECAUSE they played a name team OOC, instead of all cupcakes.

Everyone knew Alabama and Clemson were in, a lot had Oklahoma too. The only questions we had past week 5 or so (after Notre Dame played their last tough team) was whether Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan or Georgia would be the last team in.

I say totally the opposite. If you took the top 16 this year, the only team with 4 losses is Texas, who lost a rematch in the Big 12 game.

That means that 9-3 is the target to have a chance to make the playoffs. 9-3 would likely get you in IF your schedule was good, and it would still get you as a lower seed (likely a road game). What does that mean in the regular season?
Well, let's look at LSU for starters-
playoffs eliminated after the Bama game, 3 games left. 2 losses, 1-1 against Bama/Georgia, respected loss on the road at Fla. Only thing LSU was then playing for was a NY6 bowl, which they made... and players are still sitting it out to protect draft status.
Could still have been playing for seeding, 10-2 gets you a home game to open. That A&M game becomes more important.

Speaking of A&M- they finished 8-4, out of contention. So did Miss St. Maybe knowing the line is 9-3 instead of 12-1, those teams might push through for one more win and get in.

And there would still be season surprises... everyone had Auburn penciled into the Top 10, and lots had Miami. And LSU, which I brought up earlier, was only marginally ranked and nobody thought they'd be in contention.

It might also make the polls more serious, too. Biggest thing I note is Penn State at #12; for the life of me, I can't see how they finish there. That's ahead of Washington State and West Virginia (2 teams still in minor consideration late in the season), and Texas, who made the Big 12 championship.

Expanding the playoffs would finish off the bowls, and I grew up loving the bowls. But they're dead now. At least with a larger field, you have a reason for teams outside the Top 5 to finish out the season. Currently, the season was over for 95% of teams with a couple weeks to go. Nobody really cares if you make Fiesta instead of Peach or Citrus.

I hate the bye idea. Talk about unfair advantage. Has to be even numbers.

Probably so, after the '23-'24 football season. That's when the current agreement will come up for renewal.
