Would have loved to have seen Schea Cotton really get going at Bama. Still hard to believe that kid wasn't GOAT level.

Joe Harvell from Ole Miss could score in bunches in the early 90s. Averaged 25pts per game his junior year on almost 50% shooting.

I watched a game at Ole Miss where Gerald Glass and Chris Jackson faced off.

I think both had about 40 points.

That's the best superstar showcase I've ever seen highlights of. Chris Jackson scored 55 and Glass had 53. Ole Miss was winnng by 25 with 7 seconds left and Jackson scored 7 points in the last 25 seconds to send it to OT. Glass was equally incredible in that game. Ole Miss won 113-112.

As for a random player that could take over a game when he was hot, Alex Dillard from Arkansas comes to mind. He was just a reserve player on an incredible Arkansas team, but he would come in and nail 3s from the parking lot. He once drained 12 in 25 minutes. He made a scary team even scarier when he came into the game.

Good bunch of replies so far. Keep them coming. There were so many great players in the SEC over the years.

RIP to Melvin Turpin. After posting the OP I looked him up and had forgotten about his untimely death at only 49.

Litteral Green at UGA in the early 90s carried us through many games.

My memories really don't start until the mid-1990s

- James Robinson (Alabama)
- Allan Houston (Tennessee)
- Todd Day (Arkansas)
- Scotty Thurman (Arkansas)
- Wes Person (Auburn)

I still haven't any SEC player slow Corliss Williamson down.

I'll take Arkansas' gamers over just about anyone.

Day, Williamson, Moncrief, Delph or Brewer (either Sr. or Jr.), Joe Johnson...and all those other than Todd Day (who's from Memphis) are homeboys.

Dinner Bell Mel was his nickname. Dude ate like a horse. Kenny Walker has regaled us with many a tale of those days.

Joe B Hall actually had staffers guard his room to make sure he made weight. Didn't order out, accompany him if he went out so he didn't pig out, etc.

Little did they know he was getting pizzas delivered to his window! Finally got busted doing it lmao

This is not for obvious names like Maravich, Jackson, Shaq, Barkley, Mashburn, Glass, Houston, Maxwell. I'll start with a few I saw in person... Todd Day - Arkansas - saw him put up 41 I believe on LSU

I think nominating a two time all-American (Day) kind of undercuts naming a “random” player whom could step up and take over a game. He was an Uber elite college player

60's - Dan Issel. he averaged 34 ppg/13 reb his SR year at Kentucky same year Pete was in his SR year at LSU dropping 44+ per night.

70's - Bernie & Ernie - pick either or both. Tennessee still sucks.

80's - Jeff Malone - Dale Ellis - Kenny Walker - Derrick McKey - Vernon Maxwell

90's - Chris Jackson - the big fat dude from Arkansas..the one fatter & bigger than Scorliss Williamson - Billy McCaffery - Andrew DeClerq <-- not really just seeing if y'all paying attention - BJ McKie - Antoine Walker

That's a valid point. I realized after the OP was posted that he was a 13 ppg scorer in the NBA and college All-American.

He's sort of in the gray area between someone almost any sports fan knows (ie Shaq, Pistol, Barkley) and a very good to great player that is not as recognizable to the casual fan especially after 20 to 30 or more years.

T. R. Dunn was a 6’4” guard/small forward at Alabama during Leon Douglas era. Easy to overlook, he was the best defensive player, and excellent all-around, in the league at the time. I think he had a significant pro career...13 years or so. He is one of my all-time favorite players

I think this is exactly the kind of player the OP was talking about. There were games he would go like 0-7 and just drain the energy from our team and then the next game he would shoot 75% from half court and just literally destroy the defensive confidence of the other team single handedly. The very definition of a streaky player who could take over a game but wasn’t good enough to even start much less be “a star.”
