College athletics has always been about connection to the team more than the players. It’s how a ton of the teams can have solid fanbases without ever fielding a championship caliber team.
Lol at the faux outrage ITT.
There’s zero connection between Saban’s process and the university. And nobody cares because he wins. If the players don’t show up to class on Thursday, or ever, nobody cares so long as they dominate on Saturdays.
At the highest level, they’re all hired hands. And we don’t care because all that matters is they have your logo on the side of the helmet and win.
Players being employees changes nothing about the current setup. The band will still play the same songs. People will still brag about how great “we” are. And $$$ will still pour in.

I don't. Other than the Cowboys and that is not because I like the Cowboys, it is because I like Jerry Jones, and I want to see him succeed.
College athletics needs to have all their athletes qualify like regular students and go back to competing with real college students and not kids who were never meant to be on a college campus. Take the stadiums back to 40k and get rid of the tv contracts.
The network money has been the driving factor in all of this. If coaches want to make millions of dollars per year they are going to have to coach in the NFL.

"Players should be compensated for their jersey sales and video game appearances"
Enjoy this, liberal idiot fricktards.
You don't believe if somebody "uses you" to make $, you shouldn't be entitled to compensation?

We want a 12 playoffs, okay so we are extending the season another 4-5 games? Trickles into Spring…no big deal…to us fans!
I don’t want a 12 team playoff. Since it’s happening, they should drop a cupcake game.
I can’t blame the athletes taking the hits for wanting their money. This clown show isn’t on them, rather our legislators and the NCAA.
The ONLY way for that to truely work would be if conferences & scheduling were identical for all...therefore eliminating those "unfair" debates.

To call a spade a spade. The conference which operates the most like a semi-pro league is the one wanting to keep pretending these kids aren’t university employees. Every hour of their week is dictated by the university winning on Saturdays.

Free labor is about as liberal as it gets.
It was never free. The school was giving these young men education, and all the training they'd need to have a chance at the NFL. Not mention all the other benefits of being an athlete at a university. "Free", gtfoh.

And judging by history, anyone who thinks colleges can do a better job of trying to funnel a minor league football league through universities so they can make money from it is insane. Let the NFL run that minor league like baseball so it can be run correctly.

Literally what they’re doing right now. Students attend, alumni give, merchandise is sold, and billions in TV revenue all because of football players. They prop up a ton more than people think.

You’re under the impression that the average untrained eye can tell the difference between a 3 star and 5 star player. The only way you can differentiate play quality is to relativize it by dramatically contrasted abilities.
There are few if any semi pro leagues that are popular or make money.
It is undeniable that their is a demarcation and a point of diminishing interest in CFB.
You can ignore the rules of chess, but you can’t do so and continue to play chess.

Remind me what the vote was in the Supreme Court in 2021 on the athlete compensation case? (9-0)
Remind me who wrote that opinion? (That dangerous Trotskyite Gorsuch.)
Remind me who wrote the concurring opinion saying the NCAA was “operating above the law.” (That radical Leninist Kavanaugh.)
People can knee-jerk make this about the liberal-conservative red-blue divide if they want to, but that has zilch to do with this.

What is happening today is the natural progression of so much money coming into the sport. It was inevitable that the players would want a place at that trough. And the frustrating thing for college fans is that their interests and desires are not being considered, and it’s unfortunately not very likely that their interests and desires will be considered.

Anyone who didn't see this train coming down the track a looong time ago is willfully blind.

NCAA will be granted the rights of employees, including the freedom to create unions.
So players who don't care about their teammates enough to not opt out of bowl games to avoid pre-draft injuries or enter the transfer portal to enhance their personal path for success are going to forego a paycheck from their "employer" and NIL compensation and walk a picket line for those teammates?

quote:. I don't love it but this is not a crazy thing to solve for. There is a European-style club system that would work just fine with colleges.
Each school has their own semi-pro team? Kids that don’t go pro, go to school after? Idk I’m brainstorming how to save college football

Right, but it’s the perception that there’s a connection that fuels fanbases. And if we are being honest, they aren’t all hired hands. Plenty of athletes are going to the in state school regardless, plenty know they won’t have a pro football career.

You’re just confirming the fact that D3 guys wearing Alabama or Georgia uniforms will still pack the house so long as the competitive playing field is the same.

Then let’s go back to the purpose of having student athletes. Force the NFL and NBA to have minor leagues and get colleges out of the paid for play business. Harvard and Yale will be competitive with anyone again.
