Interesting read. Like I said once before, it’s time to make sports separate from school, don’t require them to attend school (or they can do it after if they don’t go pro), and set salary caps. Vandy would have an advantage.

quote:

In an effort to legally recognize college football and basketball players at the University of Southern California as employees of their school, their conference and the NCAA took a significant step forward Thursday.

The National Labor Relations Board has directed its Los Angeles regional office to pursue charges of unfair labor practices against USC, the Pac-12 and the NCAA.

The NLRB will argue that athletes at USC are employees of those three groups and that their rights have been unlawfully restricted. If they are successful, athletes who play men's basketball, women's basketball or football at any private college in the NCAA will be granted the rights of employees, including the freedom to create unions.

The claim was filed on behalf of USC athletes by the National College Players Association, an advocacy group that has led several campaigns to increase various benefits that college athletes receive. "We are working to make sure college athletes are treated fairly in both the education and business aspects of college sports," said NCPA executive director Ramogi Huma. "Gaining employee status and the right to organize is an important part in ending NCAA sports' business practices that illegally exploit college athletes' labor." Huma was also involved in helping athletes at Northwestern University attempt to form a union in a similar effort nearly a decade ago. In that case, a five-person panel from the NLRB declined to rule on a petition for Northwestern players to unionize, essentially punting on the question of whether or not college athletes should be considered employees.

Yep, almost time to stop watching. If UGA wins this year at least we can go out on top.

Each school has their own semi-pro team? Kids that don’t go pro, go to school after? Idk I’m brainstorming how to save college football

Do you root for any professional teams? If so, why?

A W appointee wrote the majority opinion in the O'Bannon case, and a Trump appointee authored the majority opinion in ncaa vs alston case... which i should point out was a 9-0 vote.

Should be required to get a degree with their scholarships or pay the money back when they leave. Sports used to be an avenue to get an education through scholarships, now it’s a farm program for pro sports or very physically gifted criminals when pro sports don’t pan out and they flunk out.

If the players want a job, then they need to go get a job.

My favorite part of this clown show is how the people who said $500 handshakes were ruining the sport are now celebrating million dollar sanctioned payouts as some way to enhance the sport.

Isn't the letter of intent each student athlete signs esentially a contract between the school and the athlete? Doesn't that contract say what's expected of each side, including compensation of the athlete by the school?

If both sides agree what's there to talk about? Don't like the terms, don't sign in LOI.

The REAL issue here isn't the NCAA and schools. It's the NFL locking kids out of the league for 3 years after high school.

Women's basketball has few fans and will make the same as football according to Title IX. The athletes in other sports will demand the same pay and somewhere a judge will agree with them. Schools may not have enough money to invest in upgrades to facilities and other needs.

While NIL is to be separate, athletes in other sports will demand their cut.

Go back to having actual student athletes playing sports for a school they care about. Let the five stars go play in whatever minor league they come up with

Labor boards will eliminate student athletes with age discrimination.

35 year old Stetson Bennett leading the Dawgs to their 7th national championship..

Age is one of the protected Equal Employment Opportunity requirements.

None of this has anything to do with NIL.

LOVE IT.

Pretty soon we’ll be able to give our hard earned money - no strings attached - to university employees. NIL, baby.

No different than what we all do when we anonymously drop off checks in the mail to show our appreciation for the student union’s janitorial crew, simply out of wholesome school spirit and generous heart.

Get rid of the scholarship, get rid of recruiting. Players have to get it like every other student and then try out for the team. No special admissions exceptions or anything else. The NCAA audits and if anything is found outside the normal admissions process the school is banned from competition for a year.

You have a return of the student athlete and an end to this nonsense.
