I honestly think that our society is in a pathetic place when an 18 year old with a strong arm is literally being bought to play for a school. This country is rotting because our values are fricked. Those famous people who constantly speak out because they inflate their own worth (Lebron)…they’re doing so because people have been kissing their arse for years.
It went from, “these kids deserve a piece of the pie from jersey sales and video games” to “how much is it gonna take for you to suit up for our school?”

It already has happened with Quinn Ewers. The state of Texas declared him ineligible his senior season so he didn't play his senior year.

Slight deflect. Excuse me, stadiums will still be 90% full.

People aren’t paying thousands of dollars or even tuning in to watch D3 kids.
People still tuned into to the Longhorns the last decade and they’ve been dogshit. You take D3 kids and put them in a UT jersey and have them play D3 kids in an aTm jersey and the place fills up.
For MANY fans, gameday is an experience where the actual game is usually secondary to tailgating and seeing friends.

But the under the table payments are ignored unless someone gets
upset at the deal.

College football was popular long before the NFL. The SEC was popular before recruiting websites existed and people used star ratings.

Okay but let’s look at us (the fans) unreasonable requests. We want a 12 playoffs, okay so we are extending the season another 4-5 games? Trickles into Spring…no big deal…to us fans!
They are risking injury, getting an added workload, RB’s take more mileage, QBs take more hits, concussions, surgeries.
I think you could take steps to make it more manageable: for example, allow an extra year of eligibility so football players can be part-time students (6 hours vs 12 hours) in the Fall semester to offset the increased load. That extra year of college is to get the last 12 hours (give them a summer school option to graduate on time). Keep better track of wear and tear on the body. Treat RB carries like pitching counts in baseball. Make a health insurance like the NFL with clauses. Like don’t they have stuff about no risky behavior like riding a motorcycle? Also, pay their health costs if the injury was football related, not for a risky behavior/outside football, compensate them, oh wait, not that bc they aren’t employees

College football existed long before the nfl. The nfl is twice (figuratively, I don't know the exact figures but its not small) as popular as college football is now too.

Yea, if the elite players didn’t play college football and there was still a similar competitive balance, fans wouldn’t care.
Attendance and ratings would be the same.
The vast majority of players aren’t pro players currently.
We are basically blowing up a great system that provides scholarships and other great benefits to thousands of college athletes for the 1 percent of potential pro players.
I would rather keep college sports and get rid of the “elite” players.

I don’t want a 12 team playoff. Since it’s happening, they should drop a cupcake game.
I can’t blame the athletes taking the hits for wanting their money. This clown show isn’t on them, rather our legislators and the NCAA.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion.

As a taxpayer, do I want the state universities running a minor league sports
program ? Maybe not u der the current format.

I’m there. You’re about 4 steps behind.

This has nothing to do with the NFL specifically, I’m just using it as a timeline. College football will remain popular regardless of who wears the jersey.

This is irrelevant to what you were suggesting.

This would be true in the 60's or 70's, those days are long gone and ain't coming back. These big schools are pumping way to much money into their football programs just so their games can be social events, they expect results.

If the 5 stars are not playing in college then the 3 star becomes the elite player.
If you took the top 500 players out of college and kept a similar talent distribution, it would still be just as popular. No one wound care.

And yet, all anyone obsesses over now are recruiting rankings and stars. The SEC is popular now because of the product on the field. It’s bigger, faster and stronger.
If that were to suddenly become a bunch of truly amateur athletes, there would still be some interest I’m sure, but it wouldn’t be the economic engine it is today.

There were years under Fran we had no NFL talent. It was hard to stay interested. You don’t remember that bc you probably didn’t tune in, and who would blame you.
Your way of thinking makes sense regionally, not nationally. I had a friend from Michigan say once he likes to watch LSU games bc they always had NFL guys. If you lose the future pro talent, you lose the national eyeballs. I watched USC games this year bc they were winning, and bc Williams is a future pro. The last time I cared about USC enough to watch more than 2 of their games, they had Reggie Bush. I can’t tell you what happened them during that gap, nor did I care bc they sucked.

They would get results. In the scenario you replied to, NO school has elite players. The 5 stars are playing in some minor league system.
A low 4-star would then be a “5-star” college recruit.
You don’t miss what you never had. As long as your team wins, it doesn’t matter. It’s all relative.
