Oats coached a good game tonight. Auburn has a talented team, with a stud big man that dominated the paint. Alabama played most of the game with a small lineup, sometimes with a guy that had a broken wrist in a cast. Took them to OT in the jungle.

Not so sure tonight is the time to call out a first year coach.

Coach Oates has a system that shooters are going to gravitate to in big numbers.

Shackleford is legit. I think long term Oates will field tournament teams most years.

I love this thread. The Alabama board called me dumb for not wanting to fire Avery. I can't wait to see Oats fail more.

Wanting the current coach to fail because you supported the last coach? Yeah you dumb

Hint: look at the higher level of competition this year with less players. If you know how to do that.

Nate Oats is a good coach. Look for Bama to be NCAA bound most years. His teams love up tempo and running

Yeah. Bama basketball is in good hands. Recruits love that style of play. Oats is much better than Avery and Grant.

I suspect the SEC is getting ready to see a resurgence in its basketball status among P-5 conferences.

Yes. It’s great for the SEC. Gone are the days where the league was lucky to get 2 or 3 teams in the tourney and the SEC champion was an 8 seed in the tourney.

If Bama plays anything like they did last night, it will be tough for LSU to beat them on Saturday even though LSU dominated them at LSU. Bama has some really good players. They seemed to really struggle stopping any penetration plays or shots down low though. If they could improve that, they would be tough.

Please don't surge to a 16-0 lead to start the game.

Avery needed to go. He had reached his ceiling. Is Oates the answer? Too soon to tell but he has shown some encouraging signs. Petty and Reese are totally different players than they were last year. One of the biggest knocks on Avery was player development so in that area he has already proven to be an upgrade. Oates in game coaching is another area I personally believe has shown to be an upgrade. The big question is can Oates recruit at the level needed to be successful. That question can't and won't be answered in year one. We'll get a better picture in year 2 when he gets more of his guys into the rotation.

This is fun.

Will Wade was 14-11 through 25 games his first year.

Johnny Jones was 16-9 through 25 in his first year.

Oh.
fricking.
Snap.

An excellent post! I wouldn't be surprised to see some NY and New Jersey kids around our program in the next few years. I've heard that he recruited well up there.
Maybe we've found us another Frank McGuire!

We just don't have the guys for that. Galin Smith is our "big man" and he's a south alabama/southern miss type player at best. 4 of our top 5 rebounders are guards. Our 6'3" starting point guard has 130 rebounds and our 6'9" "swing 4" has 111 rebounds, which is only 5 more than our 6'2" freshman 2 guard. Herb Jones is our best defender both on the perimeter and down low, and he's been battling nagging injuries all season.

I don't think the style will change much, but when Oats gets a competent player in the front court I do think it will shift a little from the long range blitzkrieg
