Seems to me he was scared coming to the SEC

If Kansas State and Iowa State could run umbrella D's with two high safeties and beat OU, what do you think he feels about going against a conference with a real D?

Besides that, he likes to trick you with his "elaborate Offensive mind". His paranoia is so bad that he would not allow very loyal ex players to watch practice.

Like he will get better players at a PAC 12 school

Past 6 seasons USC has an average of 17 in recruiting rankings
OU was 10

He says it didn't have anything to do with coming to the SEC but rather that he could never recruit to a high enough level to win it all at OU.

It's also basically what Brian Kelly was saying about leaving ND.

It's not that you can't recruit well enough, it's just that it's really hard to do when you already have to recruit nationally and your facilities don't stand out. That's why Kelly left ND.

Not sure how well that compares to OU.

Riley was trying to deny that he left Oklahoma because he was scared of the SEC, and in the process of his denial he threw his former players under the bus. But he confirmed that he was scared of the SEC by his answer......

As far as the quality of the players he started with the 2017 squad of which all of the offense played in the NFL. He finished with the 2021 squad which had two #1, 5 star QBs and 11 invitees to the NFL combine ( tied for first with Bama).

Oklahoma got worse each year under Riley and finished with a well stocked team that could barely get third in a down year for the Big 12. Riley bailed because it was obvious to those who paid attention that Riley was failing ; he wanted to get ahead of the realization that he was failing.......and in addition he was scared of the SEC

And to really go down the rabbit hole he screwed over Spencer Rattler. Lets assume LR knew he was headed to uscw in Sep - then the season makes more sense. Every game was a struggle - and he had a freshman qb (Caleb Williams) sitting on the bench. How can you get this kid to follow you to ucsw?

Well, knowing what I and so many others saw in games - LR was calling plays that hurt his qb SR. SR is not the most mobile player yet LR called so many long developing plays. This caused SR to scramble all the time and he is more a pocket passer. This also caused SR to throw into double coverage often - because LR didn’t have short routes. Teams learned this and kept 8 back and this caused problems for offense.

Struggling played right into LRs hands and allowed him the window to insert CW in the Tx game after we were down - and he ended up winning it - which gave LR freedom to keep playing him. Even though SR never lost a game last year he never got to start again. LR used that to endure CW and guess who went to uscw with LR.

I feel LR used SR to get CW inserted and its all about playcalling. I expect SR to have a good year. He’ll go against some great defenses so I’m not sure how good but if the usce OC calls better games he can move the ball and is deadly accurate if given time.

Back to LR, he has been gifted everything he has. The next day after he lost to OSU and players were called for a meeting, Bob Stoops was out golfing and got the call. He went in and took charge. LR wasn’t even going to address the players and Bob told him to get his arse in there and face them. LR did but it was half hearted.

Myself, I know the SEC won’t be Big12 and I’m glad. We’ll win less games but the games will be better. Brent V is a D minded guru and thats something we’ll have again - a D that can tackle and will hit. Might take a few years to get the right players in but he will. BV was the right coach at the right time. I’m excited the new venues and rivalries.

They need to stop putting him on lists saying he’s a top coach. He’s pretty slimy and FOS.

I think he correctly saw the writing on the wall with NIL and USC's ceiling being infinately higher in an NIL world.

Exactly! He feasted off of talent that came in from other schools. Baker, Kyler and Jalen all were developed prior to OU. Spencer was his first qb from HS. And CW lost 2 games late season as teams figured him out. LR got name recognition from those first 3 mentioned but he has yet to develop a HS qb by himself

I highly doubt it's infinitely better. USC money will dry up as soon as they hit a bump. It's LA.

Riley's problem at OU wasn't his roster. His problem was his teams were soft, because he's soft.

I made five, yes, FIVE fricking trips to Ames, Iowa, during A&M's stint in the Big XII. Fortunately, we flew in and out on the same day and never had to spend the night there. Nice people but not much else you can say for it.

The Grinch isn't an elite defensive coordinator. Honestly, it's baffling to me that they couldn't get any great front seven players. Gentry is a toothpick and he was their best front seven pickup.

He just needs to admit to being scared.

I’m not sure anyone can blame him considering anytime he has faced off with a top tier sec team he has been beaten. He even had a big lead on UGA and they came back. Bama boat raced his arse and Joe Burrow and LSU went so hard on him he still hasn’t recovered.
