I'm pretty excited about a new tradition of New Year's Kickoff Classics and the Memorial Day Six games. A warm bowl season opens up better venues nationwide.

Summer Baseball.

Fall Round Ball with December/Holiday season Madness.

to new things!

I'm glad that most of Kirk's predictions end up being a joke.

How can you play ball this fall when we're 12-18 months out from a vaccine? I mean, it's not far off.

But what happens if the Universities aren't open for fall classes? Auburn is already saying summer classes will be virtual. Do you bring the athletes back and have them just focus on football and quarantine them together in one dorm and not let any of the live off campus?

If the schools are open for fall classes, do you make the players do all on line coursework so they aren't exposed to the other students? Do you quarantine them to one dorm? If so, what do you do with the other students who would normally live in that dorm?

All valid questions, I just feel like with sports in particular (especially sports without fans discussions) the focus has shifted from "avoid major community spread through large and dense crowds" - which I agree with - to "avoid anyone getting coronavirus at all" - which is completely unrealistic and unprecedented.

The latter is how we govern stuff for the next 6-8 months, we're in big trouble. I support a shutdown right now and I support a graduated return-to-life over the next 3-4 months, but at some point we have to start saying "ok, so having a few hundred of people on campus taking precautions isn't the type of risk we're seeking to mitigate, even though a few of them could end up getting sick."

I don't mean to diminish the individual risk, but that's the approach we're all going to have to take, and that's what we're fighting for now - to get to a point where the system is operating appropriately and public health officials can identify and isolate cases if they arise.

Maybe that can't happen when scores of 80k seat stadiums are filled every week. But it can definitely be done with a 200 person football program, or baseball team, or normal-sized offices coming back on line, etc.

the financial hit if there is now football will be astronomical.

it will cripple some athletic departments.

its hard to fathom this is actually happening.

4 people were injected with a test vaccine today.

No clue where you are getting 12-18 months.

KIRK HERBSTREIT NFL AND NCAA FOOTBALL SHOULD BE POSTPONED ... Too Risky!!!- TMZ

quote:

The "College Gameday" host went on ESPN radio late Thursday and spelled out why he's so pessimistic about seeing America's biggest sport on the biggest stages.

"I'll be shocked if we have NFL football this fall, if we have college football. I'll be so surprised if that happens," Kirk said.

"Just because from what I understand, people that I listen to, you're 12 to 18 months from a [coronavirus] vaccine. I don't know how you let these guys go into locker rooms and let stadiums be filled up and how you can play ball. I just don't know how you can do it with the optics of it."

Pretty much this. I think though anybody who is adamant that football will be played is thinking with their heart and not their head.

Athletic departments are incredibly minor/inconsequential compared to the businesses already facing catastrophe.

That said, the overreaction to this virus will be studied for centuries.

It would be interesting (in a bad way) to see how Knoxville would adjust to the absence of football in the fall. It's probably large enough to make do on its own, but the absence of thousands of fans attending seven to eight home games per year will sting the hotels.
