Hard to argue with them. That was a great clip. Thanks for posting.

Disregarding the talent aspect for a moment, the boost from just playing with roughly the same guys for 3-ish years together can't be overstated. From a scheme to just familiarity on the field, today's game you have so much roster turnover each year you spend half your practice time just getting guys on the same page every offseason.

Man those were the days weren't they? Now, instead of us getting to see all these great players sit the bench, we have to watch them play against each other. Sure do miss the old days.....(eyeroll)

Hoarding talent. Playing keep away from other programs.
That was the change Saban was sad to see happening ….

He was just really good at building rapport with young athletes. They liked him so much that they were willing to be his 3rd stringers rather than start elsewhere.

Kirby using Clubber Lang as an example of brute physicality moves him up a notch in my book.

Reggie Ragland and Dre Kirkpatrick primarily played Special Teams their freshman seasons at Alabama. Can you imagine guys like that taking a back seat and playing Special Teams for a season now while becoming acclimated to the college game and the SEC ?!! Hell no. Doesn't happen.

Well yeah, it's why Saban hung it up

This new brand of football is just a worse product AND it hurts player development.

I personally prefer that teams don't have 3 deep depth full of 5* talent. Coaches having to work a bit harder now and there's more balance in the game.

I miss the Alabama teams of that time period. They were awesome and made up of dogs. It was nice when the players cared about their team.

There was lot of hard work that went into recruiting those guys and developing them in those days.

A lot of money under the table, agreed.

They didn’t care anymore than players do now. They just had fewer options because of the rules of the day.
People are only as loyal as their options. If every 250+ lb. married woman suddenly looked like prime Shania Twain, there would be a lot of divorces.

Compared to who?
Everyone who cares nationally was buying players.
Michigan? Yep
USC? Go ask their guys who lived in penthouse apartments in LA
UGA/LSU/OM/UT/A&M? Been buying players since the 60s.

I mean imagine most great teams in the past would have sig more depth.

How does it hurt development? Guys have opportunities to develop at more places. Younger guys at big programs getting more opportunities

Depends. If you havd a great developer at one school and transfer to a school with a coach who does not develop as well your development would get worse. If around the same level of devolpment, will not hurt as much. But if you have been around a person for years, they tend to know your traits, how to motivate you personally, etc.

People also tend to develop more when they are challenged and face adversity. Now adversity just means transfer more often than not.
