I never realized this was a thing. I have been to a bunch UGA alumni events centered around football games in several cities around the nation and in 3 foreign countries. Usually about 1/3 of the people at these things are not alumni....just fans far from home looking for like minded folks. I never sensed any animosity from alumni. It usually comes up “what year are you” or something along those lines.....but that’s it. I certainly envy someone with those years becoming an adult at a school that they’ve been passionate about since they were a young child....but if the only passion you have is derived from those 4-5 years it ain’t a lot of sweat equity.

Do people who feel this way feel the same way about their high school athletic program? I played 4 years at mine and will check how they are doing occasionally but I’ve never been physically ill when they lost....it’s kind of sad to think that 4 years is the basis of a lifelong passion.....

And they love to say “we”! Who are "WE"? Taxpayers, long time fans? Team members? There are very few that claim to be WE that are players, etc. Does holding a degree make you "WE"? Many fans that never attended are some of the most loyal I think.

This isn’t a pretty interesting topic.

I’m just as passionately about duck hunting and billfishing as I am UGA football. I’ve never been a mallard or a sailfish but I can’t imagine it’d make me more devoted to their pursuit if I had been?...

Putting into two camps is silly IMO

There are alums who are invested and some who don't care about any of it (football included)

There are sidewalkers who have real, genuine connections, those who care a lot about the football but don't have those connections, and shitty bandwagon sidewalkers who are useless and give everyone else a bad name.

I don't care very much about this topic, but it really only becomes of interest to me when someone who is only tied to sports tries to use other arguments against me and my school that they lack the credibility to use.

If you're a Bama or UGA fan and didn't go to either (unless you're the odd fan who went to a better school than those), and you try and talk shite about Auburn academically, then obviously I'll point that out. Otherwise, meh. I think going to a school USUALLY makes your connection deeper and beyond sports, but that's not always the case. And I certainly know some Auburn people (several who are from Auburn) who didn't graduate from Auburn but are passionate about all things AU, not just football.

One of my good friends went and played baseball at Presbyterian College in SC, but he is just as big of a SC fan as anyone I know. Donates the Gamecock club, buys football, basketball, and even baseball season tickets.

Floridian by birth...........Gator by the grace of God!
Where I went to college is irrelevant, it was fate that I became a Gator, so take your Auburn degree and stick it where the sun don't shine. Go Gators.

I don’t get that either. Outside of just talking shite to talk shite about a rivalry any University is able to make a huge difference in people’s lives. I ain’t above saying something like Auburn’s library burnt down and they lost both coloring books but anyone whose ever worked with Auburn graduates knows it’s a great school.....I can certainly understand the contempt one alumni base holds for another academically....you’ve got piles of money tied up in a degree and it’s value is based in part on public perception....it’s a smart financial move to sale your school above all others.

I have a good friend that moved to Louisiana. He went to a small college in Virginia and grew up in DC only watching pro sports. He has fallen in love with college football and decided to support LSU because it is nearby and he loves to have friends over on Saturday to watch games because he likes the sport. I dont think that weird. I think its great.

I don't get "torqued" up so your argument is complete BS.

IMHO, folks who didnt make it to college or went to a small school are free agents. Just stick with a school thru thick or thin.

But if you went to a big school and pull for Bama and are considering purchasing that Georgia shirt you saw at Wal-Mart. Stop. You are not a fan at all.

This discussion came up a little in the Auburn vs Bama thread. I always find in interesting when someone attens a school that was rival to the school they grew up rooting for, some convert and some remain fans of their old school. I can see arguments for both and it really doesn't matter who you chose to root for but its hard for me to imagine not actively rooting for a school I spend 4 years attending.

Whatever happened to RTR America? The Bama football/UK basketball "fan." Guess he couldn't take the heat any longer.

From my experience, they’re usually the trashier of the fans you’ll encounter in person.

This is definitely true.

I'm surprised they just don't follow pro football teams.

...how is it that you can get so torqued up about a team? I don't think I'd have near the interest in SEC football if I hadn't actually attended the school and received a degree from there.

I learned that what others say, do or think is none of my fricking business.

I've been a fan of Bama football since I was 12 years old- I'm 38 now. I went to college locally which was a satellite of LSU. I often bought student tickets to LSU football games and sat in the student section. Yet I could never imagine myself not being a Bama fan.
I guess it's kinda like pro teams. Should you have to live in that city or be a part of the organization to be a fan of that pro team?

It’s easy. I grew up in Baton Rouge, went to U-High, and my parents went to LSU (including family members). We moved to Birmingham when I was in High School (I went to Hoover HS) and everyone went to Alabama or Auburn...I chose Auburn bc my friends were going there. I loved Auburn as a school, but I always blead purple and gold on game days. I could have gone to LSU, but wanted to be with my friends in college. It was the right decision at the time. I love LSU more than anything, I wore purple and gold on game days and I was very proud, I married an Alabama fan and I am even more proud of my LSU affiliation because it makes football season so much fun. I love LSU ???? #lovepurplelivegold

This is so stupid. So nobody can be a fan until they are 18. Got it. I'll bet you're a country club kind of guy. Mom and dad sent u to college and u and your frat brothers partied hard in your ferragamo shoes and bugatchi button down collar shirt. Must be nice to be so "exclusive"
