I attended South Carolina but my father in law was as big a Gamecock fan as I am (maybe more) and he attended and played at Newberry College. It kind of gets in your blood early on and you just ride it out through life.

...how is it that you can get so torqued up about a team? I don't think I'd have near the interest in SEC football if I hadn't actually attended the school and received a degree from there.
My grandfather grew up watching Alabama football back in the 30s. Every generation since has been an Alabama fan. Heck, I grew up in the 80s - hardly a "jump on the bandwagon" time frame for being an Alabama fan, but I was one then.
Where a person goes to school is 4 years. If they were cheering for a team for as long as they can remember, that's a much longer tie to that fandom than the period spent at the actual school. That even presumes going to a school that even has a team.
The logic gets even more convoluted when you consider career military personnel (who may never get degrees or get theirs online), people who go into family businesses or go for trade industries. None of these individuals are "less worthy" of cheering for a team, but there are certain fanbases that will INSIST that the Sgt in the Marines isn't allowed to cheer for a team because he never graduated from the school.

so some kid got mommy and daddy to fork over tens of thousands for them to attend a mediocre state school or went into huge debt to do it most likely. Congratulations? This board is probably the largest collection of elitist pricks in the southeast. It's definitely interesting to behold.

This board? the SECRant? Elitist?

Criteria seems odd given it is typically the interest in the team sport that draws varied levels of engagement from fans, not the institution itself.
As another has alluded to, the same holds for pro sports fans. It would be quite a reduction in viewership if fans were determined by city or if they had to have previously/currently held a position within the team structure to hold a real fan card.
If it makes you feel any better, for the most part, major public school athletic departments are funded primarily through separate private foundation accounts to provide for athletic facilities and expenses. So, to some degree, fans are really just pulling for a private organization associated with a college/university.
To your point, most people who have pursued continued higher education and or professional certifications attend a variety of Universities throughout their academic endeavors. Personally, I couldn't imagine "getting so torqued" or otherwise emotionally invested in the 3 other institutions I currently hold degrees, two of which have major sports programs. I just pull for UA in D1 athletics. Always have, always will. I do have a degree from UA, but had I not attended there for post-graduate work, I'd still be a fan ... attendance didn't strengthen or weaken my interest in UA sports.

You sound like someone who didn't actually go to school either. I guess to be a Packers fan you have to work in the organization? Nice troll, though. Ppl will definitely respond to this post. My father and everyone in my family attended the U of A. He raised me on Bama football. Kind of hard not to care about it. I was planning on going to Alabama but got in a bit of trouble and ultimately went straight into the illustrious world of selling bearings.

I was a LSU fan since 2001, 5 years before going to school there.

I've been an LSU fan ever since I knew what a football was. I received my degree elsewhere only because LSU didn't offer a degree in my field. Geaux Tigers!

I remember a year when Texas beat A&M on Thanksgiving, then showing up Monday morning to hear a group of about 6 guys give me grief about it. Went on and on about how “A&M sucks” and “We kicked your arse.”
Let them go in for a while, then I asked, “You do realize that I am the only one in this conversation that actually went to and graduated from the University of Texas, right?” (Got my MBA there.)
Lots of hemming and hawing ensued. This is why I don’t have much respect for T-shirt fans that talk trash about other schools.

I attended and received a degree from Alabama but I've been a Bama fan since I was 7 years old. I was born in Mobile and grew up in a family that loved college football; had two older brothers, one was a UGA fan and the other a Tennessee fan. My Dad was an ACC fan and pulled for North Carolina...

Are you a fan of any NFL team? Or any other professional team? I would guess not...since you could neither attend class nor receive a degree from a professional sports team, you'd apparently have no interest..

I can see a distinct difference between the two. Pro sports are usually a regional thing, especial for a State that does not have a pro team (Alabama). USUALLY a college team's fan either went to the university or for the above stated reasons pull for that university.

Home Team Pride. Some of us have pride in where we come from (USA) and the football team represents our home state to a certain extent, but we understand that you don't understand this since, well, your an Auburn fan and your just a barn in a field.

Do you pull for a pro team? Did you play for them?

I guess it depends upon where you live...I grew up in middle Georgia and I've been a Falcons fan since the late 60's, early 70's. Most of my friends growing up were either Cowboys or Steelers fans...when I'd go to a Falcons game back then, I'd usually see a disproportionate number of fans for the opposing team...
There are a lot of things that can factor into college football fandom besides attendance: region, parental influence, television, generational players, as well as jumping on the bandwagon of a winning team. I'm a hardcore Bama fan but I've seen a lot of folk who never attended the school who are probably more fervent supporters than I, good and bad...

Well, I've been a Georgia football fan since I was like 10, so I'm actually questioning the legitimacy of your football fandom here, not mine.

2 questions for OP
1. How old are you?
2. When is the last time you had sex with your mother?

I read this a few times and I’m still stuck with how you’re, in any way, a better fan than your heckler Texas fan work guys. In fact, I’d say you’re worse considering you virtually said you had more right to allegiance to Texas, the Aggies supposed mortal enemy, than these other guys. I guess it’s ok in your mind to play both sides.

You went to school and don't get team pride? Not just for those who went. Do you like an NFL team? Well you didn't play for them so why are you a fan? Get it now?

Apparently not because most are going after the OP for this topic.
