Killing us in SC, too. The deer don’t have to move far on my wife’s family land bc the white oaks are so abundant.

Third hunt of the season. Should start getting interesting this week
Union County, SC just off of HWY 215.
I appreciate all of the feedback. Just to clarify, I know nothing about what the neighbors do on their property or if anyone is hunting those properties. There is one house on one of the larger tracts just south of this one, but the rest appears to be all wooded (per Google Earth).

This area is a hot bed for deer hunting though, so I know the deer are there. Per the state deer density map, it is in the highest category and is less than a mile from one of the largest river systems in SC.

I was just trying to weigh the pros/cons. I am going to put a camera up this weekend to see what action comes through there, but this thread has been helpful.

This is exactly my thought process here. I don’t know that she or her husband even know the neighbors. Her son hunted turkeys out there this spring which makes more sense, but deer poses that big question.

How small is too small?

My co-worker recently gave me permission to hunt a wooded tract of land that she and her husband bought that they will ultimately build on in a few years. It’s an 8 acre tract surrounded by several other large-acre tracts. Probably 250-300 acres total.

Pros: It’s 30 mins from my house and in a heavily wooded area. My wife’s family land where I normally hunt is 1:45 away.

Cons: I know nothing about the neighbors, and the property is shaped like a long rectangle. 200 feet wide, 1,700 feet long.

Anyone have any tips or recommendations, or should I just consider this a wash and do what I normally do and make the longer drive?

We put two new ones out by our pond last weekend. Hoping to get some action now that we have rebuilt our pond from the dam breach last spring. We put one back in the woods on the creek and the other in the corner of the pond.
We have four Stealth Fusion Max Cams on our property, and they take a ton of batteries… 8 AAA, I think, but they stay powered for a while. It really depends on how much action they are getting and how often you set the camera to take pictures during the same scene. We have been satisfied with them. They also give you an On Demand feature so that you can see what’s happening before you hunt that particular stand/area.

Last hunt of the season for me.
If it’s brown, it’s down. Need some more meat for the freezer

If it’s brown, it’s down. One week left here in SC.
Formerly had a pair of Xtratufs, but I am wearing Aftco’s now. They fit a little more secure, but are super comfortable and have a little thicker sole.

We are post-rut in SC, and all of the movement we are seeing starts right at dusk. Mostly does, but we have two shooter bucks who are still showing up from time to time. Had heavy rain most of the day yesterday, but we had 10 does come out to feed about 5pm after it stopped on one of our cams.

New stand for me. Down at the bottom of a gulley with a good flowing creek.

Edit: Hunt was cut short. 45 mins after I posted this, all hell broke loose behind me. 4 does went racing through the woods in a full sprint about 40 yards up the hill behind the stand. 10-15 seconds after they went by, two pitt bulls ran by behind me and then circled around down to the creek right in front of where my stand was. They both had on collars, so definitely someone’s pet. We hunt about 255 acres, and the surrounding land is also comprised of larger tracts. My only guess is that they came from across the hwy. There are about 15 houses on a dead end road, so hopefully this is a one off and we don’t see the dogs again.

In the office until I noon today. Will hunt tonight, tomorrow morning, and Friday morning. Bucks have re-appeared on our cameras the last few days including a good 9 with a drop tine on the right side. Hoping to get lucky! Good luck!

Pouring rain in SC, but we have been seeing bucks chase on our cameras the last two days/nights. Playing golf this weekend, but plan to get out there Monday and hope one makes a mistake. Good luck!!!

Used to hunt some in Liberty Hill when I was in college. Buddy’s family owned a house on Wateree and had about 30 acres on the other side of the road. Always tons of deer down there.

Had a good buck on camera at 10:22 two mornings ago. Hope he returns. Nada so far.
We haven’t had rain in SC since Helene hit the end of last month. Deer are moving slow on the property I hunt in Union County, SC. 255 acres, and we have seen a few on the cameras at night, but barely anything during the day. We were seeing them like crazy all Summer and into September.
