I read this a few times and I’m still stuck with how you’re, in any way, a better fan than your heckler Texas fan work guys. In fact, I’d say you’re worse considering you virtually said you had more right to allegiance to Texas, the Aggies supposed mortal enemy, than these other guys. I guess it’s ok in your mind to play both sides.

Clearly, you missed the point.

I have no problem with someone wanting to be a fan of a school they did not go to. I have a buddy that is a huge Wisconsin fan, but went to Yale. No problem, because I have never heard him say "We" and trash other schools.

Being FOR a school is fine. Thinking you are part of it is what makes you look silly. I recognize that sounds elitist, and I wish there were a way to say it without it doing so.

Look at it this way: I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. Grew up at the altar of Tom Landry and Roger Staubach. Not as easy these days, but can't shake it. I still don't say "We" when I talk about them playing another team. I am a fan. I am not a Dallas Cowboy.

Then you didn't grow up watching Auburn football.

I attended LSU but didn’t graduate from there. Didn’t grow up in LA. Just fell in love with everything LSU during my time there.

That’s my story but you really shouldn’t look down on people who pull for a team that didn’t go there. In case you didn’t know, a majority of the revenue for a team such as Auburn or LSU comes from die hard fans who didn’t necessarily go there. You should be thanking these people not shitting on them. It makes people like you look like a total arse hole

...how is it that you can get so torqued up about a team? I don't think I'd have near the interest in SEC football if I hadn't actually attended the school and received a degree from there.

How about growing up 30 minutes from campus? Does that count? How about going to multiple games a year growing up? Does that count? Just because I didn't go there doesn't make me less of a fan. Sometimes life takes you in different directions. I know plenty of people who couldn't care less for the school they actually graduated from, me included (UNLV).

I grew up in Louisiana. LSU is the state school. Entire family/friends are LSU fans. Was born into being an LSU fan. I didn't go to college, joined the USMC instead. Pretty easy to be a massive fan of a school I didn't attend. That's just me though..

Don’t listen to these pricks. I’m in the same boat as you (UL-Lafayette). These arse holes want to put down the folks who didn’t attend the school but they won’t say shite when people like us give our money to better this school we “have no business being a fan of”

Stockholm Syndrome. Growing up in Nashville with parents from Cincinnati and Louisville, we realized how awful UK basketball and UT football fans are and became Vandy fans by proximity and appreciation of what the university and athletics were trying to do. Didn't quite make the grades for Vandy, and I ended up at Auburn for engineering after falling in love on a visit. Still didn't change how passionate I am for Vandy. Being a freshman in 2012 where Vandy goes 9-4 and Auburn went 3-9 probably helped keep Vandy as my priority. I still love Auburn University and being at every game for Auburn's 2013 run was incredible. It still didn't overcome what I grew up rooting for, no matter how painful it often is.

Pretty fricking simple. Born and bred Lexington, Kentucky. Decided to go to a better school because I am not so simple minded as to think my connection to the University or its athletics programs depends on my turning down better opportunities in order to attend the school I root for, thereby validating my fanhood.

TL; DR: UK is a huge part of my hometown (and my state) and I support the town, the school, and the sports.

And also, frick you. The implied assumption that the school you root for is too good/expensive for the sidewalk fan is fricking hilarious coming from an Auburn fan. Not to mention some of the best people and fans I’ve ever met didn’t go to college at all.

If you're just looking for a fight. Find the drunk guy in his 20's or 30's who never went to Their selected school but is doing unapproved pro bono work for the marketing department.

My father graduated from Auburn and he couldn't care less about their football team.

Imo, games are more of a social event for fans that graduated from the school and more of a sporting event for those who didn't.

Feel like that's a good way to put it. More of a connection for alumni, but that doesn't always mean more passion. My dad went to a small school and 100% bought into A&M when I got there, going to every home game for the 8 years my sister and I were in school. He's a much bigger A&M fan than my buddy, who will likely be shocked to find out Sumlin was fired when he tunes into the first of maybe 3 games he'll watch this year

Agreed. I know several A&M flunkies here in Htown who live and die by what happens in Aggieland. LSU has the same.

Certainly touched a nerve. Like I said earlier, so much projection going on in this thread. I know I'm not going to Sonic for dinner tonight!

I’ve never understood why anyone takes issue with why a fan is a fan. Dear students of particular school no one is taking away the memory of your algebra professor who did that thing in your class that time or the first bj you got in the dorm room or any other experience you had on campus. Just let those of us who didn’t attend the school be a fan, what’s the problem with that?

I really don't care if you have a degree from LSU or not. I care about how you represent the school when you wear purple and gold. I've seen some very respectful and knowledgeable fans who don't have LSU degrees who support the athletic programs, and I've seen some real dick bags who have LSU degrees who act like assholes.

I don't get caught up on the t-shirt fan versus alumnus bullshite. Be respectful and represent the school well. That's what I care about.

Not everyone is able to attend the University, but loyalty is loyalty. I was accepted to Alabama but not Auburn and I have rooted for Alabama ever since, because they gave me a chance and I'll never forget that.

Well said!

For every trashy t-shirt fan, there’s 3 entitled d bag obnoxious alumni fans.
