"Yea, it was there, no question," Orgeron told WWL's Mike Detillier. "I mean, they had a history there of, you know, racism and Colonel Reb, but you know what, when we got there, the kids that we had were treated good and they had success, but we did face it in recruiting and they still have that stigma, but look, they overcame it. They got some great players. They’ve had success, graduated, went on to the NFL."

"I think that stigma is always going to stay with them," Orgeron continued, "just like other schools have a stigma, but that is definitely there at Ole Miss.”

Orgeron legitimately dealt with a lot of the turmoil regarding these symbols. Colonel Reb had just been removed. Dixie was still being played. And Orgeron still framed it as something he worked through and had some kids find success. Lane had the flag in 2020, but it wasn’t intrinsically related to Ole Miss. Interesting to see the difference in how these guys frame it.

Plus the lack of NIL in O’s days.

It may be a talking point at Thanksgiving or an uncle's birthday cookout, but when money and scholarships are on the table and a chance to play for a team in the mix they dont care.

As long as they continue to win it wont matter.

Yes just like George Wallace has really impacted Bama’s ability to recruit.

Everyone involved with any of those issues is dead.

Gen Z doesn’t even know who they are until it’s time for a history test.

I don't disagree with you, but perception means more than reality these days.

Morgan Freeman sure as hell doesn't have a problem with Ole Miss. Why does he go to so many games and not complain about the past?

Because Morgan Freeman is immersed in the reality of Ole Miss, he isn't basing everything on a belief built in his mind.

What perception?

OM was bad at football for a long time because they had inferior coaching and resources. That’s the reality.

If “historic racism” was truly a limiting factor Alabama would be behind other schools… but we aren’t because it’s a BS narrative used for reasons that have nothing to do with objective fact.

Most black athletes got over this decades ago to the point that many northern black athletes want to come play at these schools in the south.

Lane is FOS and LSU fans are only backing the narrative because he’s your coach and you want to troll OM.

If you're saying there isn't a perception of racism at Ole Miss, then you're just burying your head in the sand.

Haha Ive worn antebellum colonel sanders costumes for Ole Miss formals and had Confederate flag in my dorm window. That was a long time ago.

As much as I hate the perception I get it, but I participated in it and had a lot of fun.

So one person represents a whole race? Harv Weinstein now represents all white men according to your line of thought.

Holy frick that is very racist. One black person not being offended means all black people are not offended at all. The frick...

I don't even think the perception is fair, but it definitely exists.

Remember Orgeron is 2-0 vs. the best coach in the SEC and coached at Ole Miss and LSU.

He probably knows what he is talking about.

Lane was speaking about grandparents of recruits bringing it up, which I can totally see.

There is zero doubt that Coach O had to recruit against the bad imagery that Ole Miss flaunted at one point. However that was 2 decades ago. Ole Miss of 2005 is quite different from Ole Miss of 2025 as is the whole world
