Went to the LSU Tigers vs South Carolina Gamecocks last October as a neutral fan, and it was one of the more eye-opening experiences I’ve had as an outsider. Incredible atmosphere, passionate fanbase, everything you’d expect from a major SEC Saturday.

But during the game I asked multiple people around at various tailgate points if anyone knew whether the Indiana Hoosiers vs Oregon Ducks game was on at a local bar.

This was a top-ten matchup with major national implications. Complete crickets. Nobody knew, nobody cared, nobody was even curious.

Meanwhile, while everyone was locked into conference tunnel vision, Indiana Hoosiers football was building toward an undefeated season. Same thing happened when I said Fernando Mendoza looked like an NFL-caliber quarterback — instant laughter.

The irony now? Indiana Hoosiers football won the national championship, and Fernando Mendoza took home the Heisman. The same things that got shrugged off in that stadium ended up becoming the biggest storylines in the sport.

That got me thinking: do SEC fans live in a bubble?

Indiana Hoosiers

It's possibly the greatest single season of all time.

Still, no one cares about IU vs. Oregon unless they are fans of the school, have a bet on the line, or have CFB fantasy players involved.

It isn't a bubble. It is just a fact of life. I have to check Bama game times multiple times. I have zero interest in keeping up with other college games.

They also have Google nowadays if you ever run into the same issue

I can hardly find the time to watch South Carolina anymore, not that I want to, much less any other game. Sometimes, I'm actively going out of my way to not watch South Carolina.

Dear diary. I love Fernando Mendoza so much and I can't understand why everyone else doesn't want to slob his knob like i do. I think I am going to make up a really cool story today to make everyone else feel foolish for not worshiping his little wiener as much as I do.

And a tip. In case this every happens in real life instead of your wet dream, you should open your phone up to google maps, find the bar, call that bar and ask. They will probably know about what they will be showing at 3:00 instead of the people at a tailgate for a 6:45 game.

If you are not trolling and wanting honest answers here my take is your examples were about Indiana (the worst CFP in history) and Fernando (a guy who transferred rom Cal and doesn't exactly have the "look" as well as he wasnt pushed as a heisman frontrunner during the season until the end so he wouldnt really be top of mind.

He also was QB1 at the historical worst program in America so not exactly winning the benefit of the doubt. Glad IU won and he wont he trophy but prior to them winning with 0 historical success most fans were not going to want to watch IU for any reason. Also, last year they were able to win a cupcake schedule and propel that to the playoffs but they didnt really belong, this year they proved they did.

Wait, I want to make sure I understand.

You expected people at a tailgate to know if a particular bar planned to show another game? And you’re confused as to why they didn’t know?

Several years ago pre-SEC Texas played Ohio State in the regular season. A higher percentage of televisions tuned in to watch the game in Birmingham than in either Austin, TX or Columbus, OH. So no, we don't all live in a bubble. Some of us appreciate the sport as a whole.
