A list that doesn't have Mississippi on it is shite!! I moved from Mississippi to Arkansas to get away from the rampant crime.

CNBC 10 Worst States to Live 2026

Rhode Island is probably the only state small enough where this could be so all-encompassing a statement.

Every state has wonderful parts to live in and horrible parts, and it also depends on what you want.

If you thrive on a bustling night life, a big city (NYC, LA, etc) is critical; for other people, it's an annoyance.

If you have certain medical needs, living in rural areas might be impossible.

I live in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia, and I love it here. No intention of ever leaving.

OTOH, I've been through NoVA many times and it's not for me at all. I would probably hate living there.

BOTH are Virginia, but are WILDLY different. One is suburbia to the extreme, and the other is a verdant valley of green trees and medium-sized towns separated by quite a bit of distance.

As someone who grew up in Alabama and lived in places like Alabaster (before it exploded), Montevallo, Hoover, Homewood, etc... I can see that, despite all the areas being with 50 miles of each other, they were all vastly different experiences.

That being said, I'm not saying SOME of their points are without merit... Alabama has a rough time keeping quality medical people in state, for example, despite generating a lot of good ones through UAB.

This is complete utter propaganda and gutter trash. With a closed border they can't backfill population losses to the blue states to control the loss of representatives in congress, so now they have to do what they can to make the most successful states in the country look unappealing.

I would almost call it satire.

Based on Tennessee rapid growth of people moving here from supposed more desirable states, I would say the dildo author is full of shite man.

Looking at the methodology, Tennessee basically got dinged for being too conservative politically, as did most of the southern states on the list

Yeah, this list is complete garbage. People are flocking to Tennessee (which is becoming a big problem) and northwest Arkansas is a boom area with so much to offer.

Nashville's growth is similar to what happened to Austin. It's marred by sky high prices, snarling traffic and an influx of people that are very unlike native Tennesseans. But it's boom city in every respect.

The person that wrote this piece doesn't like Tennessee's politics, which are similar to Oklahoma's and Texas.

That's where my parents live after living in NOVA for 30+ years. Both are extremely different, and can be heaven on earth or hell depending on what you are looking for.

Everyone has different interests and want different things out of their day to day life. It's impossible to group a state entirely together, as you note.

Lists like this are always ridiculous as what is a great place to live v. horrible is entirely individual dependent.

Alabama got dinged for not mandating equal pay by gender and race, not having protections against sexual harassment and being only 1 of 5 states “with no public accommodation law protecting non-disabled people against discrimination.”

On equal pay, I would love to force my employer to pay me what some of the senior women and people of color in my organization make, no matter how stupid that concept is.

Apparently the author is unaware that federal anti-discrimination laws on race and sex apply in Alabama, making it wholly unnecessary for Alabama to have duplicative laws on the subject.

And if you aren’t disabled, exactly what public accommodation do you need?

One of the other criteria was abortion rights - they explained that young women don't want to live in states where you can't get abortions -- also, voting rights - these states require ID to vote

Yeah evidently, they really didn't like that men weren't allowed in women's restrooms in Tennessee.
