Brian Bosworth made me arm-wrestle him for the future of Dr. Pepper.

I chose to keep the arm.

I feel like some on this board put Notre Dame on a higher pedestal than they deserve.

Notre Dame is technically a blue blood but they've been a "has been" for awhile now.

They don't have a major bowl win since 1994, that's obviously a program that far predates Kelly, they don't have top 10 facilities in the country, they don't even spend that much on recruiting if you compare it to the top schools in the SEC.

Look at their records the decade prior to Kelly being hired:
1999- 5-7
2000- 9-3
2001- 5-6
2002- 10-3
2003- 5-7
2004- 6-6
2005- 9-3
2006- 10-3
2007- 3-9
2008- 7-6
2009- 6-6

Notre Dame is extremely overrated as a program these days.

Meh. In his first year (2010), they got blown out by Navy. That was the 3rd time in 4 years ND lost to Navy after winning 43 straight against them. It took him awhile, but the difference in speed, physicality, and overall talent at the end of his time there compared to the beginning was very noticeable.

Notre Dame is and always will be a college football blueblood, but they just don't get the same caliber of athlete there that schools in the South or Ohio State get. Kelly took that about as far as it can be taken and when they're looking to replace Marcus Freeman after they fire him around 2026 or so, Kelly will get more credit for the job he did there.

I will likely never disagree with Notre Dame being over-rated.

However, we are comparing them to 90's Michigan St. Also, Notre Dame's schedule was typically harder in the time period you cite. Back when teams like USC and Michigan were still good.

So the difference in name brand, resources etc was pretty big even if Notre Dame is over-rated.

Comparing Michigan State and Toledo to Notre Dame?

Wow. I knew LSU fans were among the least knowledgeable in all of CFB, but it's rare to see one to put it out there so blatantly.

Now do Michigan St in the 90s.

I didn't/don't think Brian Kelly was a bad hire for LSU, but I think what Saban did at Michigan St was a much bigger accomplishment.

Very similar trajectory. Saban's first game at Michigan State was a 50-10 home loss to Nebraska. Four years later, they had a 42-3 halftime lead on Notre Dame and beat #1 Ohio State in Columbus.

Side note: His first game at Michigan State was against 1995 Nebraska. That is the ultimate baptism by fire....

I think it'll happen, but it won't happen next season and maybe not the season after either. By his third season though, watch out, he'll be rebuilt completely by then.

At ND, Kelly coached student athletes. He has no such restrictions at LSU.

At Georgia, Smart as largely coached professional athletes who occasionally attend classes at UGA.

Ok, let's do that.

He was at Toledo for 1 year. Where he took a team that went 6-5 the previous 2 year and finished 9-2 with them.

He took over a Michigan St team that was being sanctioned the first few years, and they weren't even getting bowl eligible. But during the sanctions he still managed to get them bowl eligible, and then started beating high ranked teams and even when they lost, they were still doing well in games. Not blow outs and such. Went 9-2 his final year in the Big10, and then went to LSU.

Taking teams like that and improving them is what you look for.

Brian Kelly improved Notre Dame over what he took it, but it's just not the same difficulty is all.

I believe Saban was actually the best coach in the NFL. He just didn't have the players.

That blue blood had just gone through the Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weiss eras. They weren’t exactly great when BK got there.

Alabama > Georgia. So, yes, but it's ridiculous to think about. Alabama and Georgia aren't going anywhere anytime soon. LSU may throw their hat in the ring, but they aren't "taking down" Alabama or Georgia.

The elusive 15-0 without the * is still chapping your arse eh mate?

We’re 2-0 vs strong Georgia teams or are you unable to give credit where it’s due? Meanwhile, you guys lost 2 games last year so you’re not trending up despite what you may believe sir. Still a strong squad but the days of you waltzing into the CFP are over.

I don't think that's a given. Les had LSU competing at a high level in the toughest division for years
