I can't disagree with the market being set very high for a real DC the SEC-W. It's the crucible for DC's. Get the recipe right and you get impermeable metal. Get it wrong? The list of names that couldn't cut it is long and not undistinguished.

Holy Smoke.

Kiffin
Leach
Pelini

All on a sideline in the SEC-W. What could possibly go wrong? It's going to be almost as fun watching the sidelines as watching a game!

All we need now is Carl Pelini attacking a cameraman.

And, you think LSU can go back and pay someone to be their DC after Aranda for much less than $2 million

Sure they can.You think Clemson will pay Venables replacement close to what he's getting now?

Kirby was getting paid $1.5 million as Bama's DC in '15 and none of his replacements were paid that much.Lupoi was
paid 900k in '18

Again,Elko and Steele aren't top "DC's" and are the only DC's in the range along with Venables and now Pellini

Not sure why Steele isn't up there, he absolutely is, have you seen Auburn's defenses the last 4 years? 1 bad year at LSU doesn't change that. He got paid for delivering elite defenses at Auburn.

Elko is overpaid but Aggies overpaid for a lot because just throwing money at whoever. Still, finished #21 at aggy in 2018 and #23 in 2019. He was #15 at ND in 2017. Has he produced elite defenses? Nope, but still no bad ones either. Point is the going rate now for DCs has been pushed up by a number of guys. Hard to exclude Aranda just because he got a promotion less than 2 weeks ago. There's a handful of guys that have made or make $2M-$2.5M recently, so $2M isn't exactly looney tunes for a previously elite guy who has been a HC ever since then.

As others have said, arms race in SECW right now. Steele, Elko and formerly Aranda now Pelini all making $2M+ as DCs. Even Chavis made like what $1.6M last year at Arkansas?

No idea you "bide your time" by becoming a HC at a D1 CFB program.

Sure you do, no pressure.

That's more like how you retire. Maybe Pelini wanted to keep his chops up.

We paid Aranda $2.5 and we're paying Bo $2. $500k less. Your example is $600k less. This isn't shocking by any means.

That’s a huge price tag for him. He may be great but I’d have taken a wait and let him earn that.

I don't know about this specific case but you can't just do this in many contracts and expect to get paid.

Pruitt is a Bama alum and I get the feeling he was willing to take less money than Kirby as a means to put himself in position for a head coaching job which is what he did. I don't think Pruitt would've taken less money from anyone else other than Bama and Saban.

Lupoi was a first time coordinator and Golding had been a coordinator at UTSA; neither of them had championships on their resumes like Pruitt. Pelini has a championship on his resume as a DC and a very respectable record as a head coach.

Really?

Lupio's salary was far less as percentage of Kirby's salary...over a 1/3.Even you can figure that out.

I don't know why folks get hung up on what coaches make. I didn't give a shite that Saban was the highest paid HC in the country when Mal brought him in.

I am going by S&P which is advanced stats, adjusts for a lot of things.

LINK

#32 ranked D at Wake Forest in 2016

Also not sure to which category you are referring to where Wake was "Top 10" in defensively. Not seeing that in total D (#40) or scoring D (#23) for Wake in 2016.

What's so funny? He's known for having great defenses and has proven his worth at LSU in the past. This is a very solid hire by orgeron once again. Our defense is going to be stellar with the talent we have and pelini coaching them up. I'm actually excited bc I thought LSU was missing some agressiveness this season with our defensive playcalling. Bo is going to bring pressure for damn sure and always has been known for having dominant defensive lines. This is a great hire, like I said. Idk why it's so funny that we are paying him 2 mil a season? He's definitely a proven DC, winning a natty at LSU in the past. Geaux tigers.

What was the other solid hire by Orgeron for this to be "once again"? Giving Ed credit for hiring Brady now?

Terrible hire. He has a terrible attitude and his defenses are outdated for today’s new style of offense

All of this. What kind of idiots give a guy struggling at his current job a massive raise to come to their program?

Insanity.
