No, he’s advocating for a format change to fix a problem that doesn’t exist outside of coaches prioritizing wins over players. Maybe he should advocate for pitch count limits and mandatory rest if he’s TRULY concerned.

And that is shitty. Rain delay or not, you shouldn’t be playing baseball at midnight.

I have an issue with this part of his rant. Nobody HAS to come back and pitch. That’s why you have a full roster of players and a pitching staff.
Will he cry about the format in Omaha, too?

There’s a reason for that format and it’s because baseball is fickle so one loss shouldn’t put you out of a tournament, but if you deserve to advance and are good enough but had an unlucky game then you should have the pitching depth to climb out of the losers bracket.

The Omaha format has the same 4-team bracket, but days off in between. Much more spread out.
But, I don't have a problem with the regional format. Ole coach should have seen the 6-team regional format that was around for years. Loser bracket path required winning 6 games in 4 days.
This current format stretches teams in different ways at each level. He doesn't like it, but I do.
I do think we'll see more and more "upsets" at regionals due to talent being more spread out now with NIL/transfers.

Are most of the people here retarded? He didn’t do what he is talking about. He said he saw on tv, when they weren’t playing, a starting pitcher who had thrown a hundred pitches come back and pitch again the same weekend. He isn’t whining, he pointing out a problem. JFC, I am well aware that Auburn has had coaches say some dumb shite through the years, but this ain’t it. Damn.

Regional format is part of what makes college baseball great, and has provided some of the best moments.
Having said that, move the CWS final back for sure. It's ridiculous that Paul Skenes never pitched in a CWS final. I suspect this issue will get fixed as college baseball grows in popularity.

But that bracket can also screw you for the championship series if coming out of losers’ bracket like with LSU not being able to throw Skenes in the championship series.

That is why it is important to develop pitching depth during the season. You have 26 OOC games along with 30 conference games to do so. It is imperative to give those young pitchers and others opportunities to pitch so that when the regionals come about, you are prepared if you lose an early game.
Yes, sometimes you win three straight but it is never an automatic situation.
It is hard to believe Coach Thompson actually complained about that.
Had they won three straight, I suspect it would have been crickets.

Just like football players chose to play with concussions for years. At a certain point there should be reasonable rules to protect the athletes.

It seams like a fair point for the Regional Format. It's not like he's the only only coach advocating for it.
Wow…UT’s coach complaining about this?
His program has more money than the other three programs they faced in the Austin Regional COMBINED to go out and buy a bullpen full of arms to make it through Regional weekend.
What a joke.

quote:The newer (1988) "made for TV CWS", having 2 different 4 team tournaments, with days off between the two mini-tournaments and a 2 of 3 game CWS Finals allows for more "rest days" for the pitchers, which dilutes the necessity of a deep pitching staff. 2 quality starters and a bull pen ace are enough for a team to win the CWS.

The CWS should never be about one or 2 players. It is supposed to be about the Best Team, including the best pitching staff.
The older CWS format (pre 1988), a single 8 team bracket, put a premium on starting pitching AND pitching depth, as teams played every day until the tournament was completed (not every team played every day) . You needed 3 quality starters on a regular rotation to advance and win the CWS. Nobody got to "rest" their starting pitching, and 4 teams did not get to play in an "easier" bracket. You had to beat all of the best teams in a single 8 team bracket.
In 1987 (old format), Stanford played 6 games (5-1, v. 4 teams) in 9 days, including playing 5 games in 6 days, and 4 games in 4 days .
Stanford played against Georgia, Ok State (2), LSU, and Texas(2) to win the CWS.
In 2025, LSU played 5 games (5 wins, v. 3 teams) in 9 days, including playing 2 games in 2 days, w/ 2 days off, and 2 games in 2 days. Coastal Carolina). Had LSU lost in the finals, Skenes would have been available for a 3rd game, pitching on 4+ days rest.
LSU played against Arkansas (2), UCLA and Coastal Carolina (2) for the CWS Championship.
Playing 4 games in 4 days is much different than 4 games in 6 days, with 2 days rest in between.
With the transfer portal and NIL, it is much easier to win a regional, and the CWS. That doesn't necessarily mean the best team won, just the best team with the 2 best starters.
More often than not, the 2 best teams are in the same bracket.
