re: State had a terrible sports year

Tennis team is hosting a regional this weekend. Both golf teams are good and we have had some Track and Field success as well. Men’s and Women’s basketball made the Tournament. Softball team is ranked in the top 20.
Football is going through tough times but not all is bad.
May want to reconsider your words there.

I will say Milroe if he will consent to being used like Taysom Hill. I think he could be a great utility offensive player. QB, RB, WR, TE. But not a full time QB.
Sanders will possibly be a third QB on a roster.
Just don’t see him being a consistent good QB in the league.

“No Florida players in the first two rounds. This has got to be another all time record for Florida set by the moron head coach we have. Reality is going to set in with our team and all these guys with NFL aspirations are going to realize that if they want to move on they’re going to have to move on because this numb skull isn’t going to be the person to make that happen. Billy is not, never was and never will be SEC head coach capable.”
Some of the posters on this site have the patience of a gnat. Attitudes like this are the reason Florida has been in a rut for fifteen years. However, if you watched your team last year, you made tremendous strides and this year your outlook looks very good.
Give the guy a fair shake before you pull the plug.

re: Am I the only one that couldn't care less about the NFL draft?
Posted by Godawgs4 on 4/25/25 at 2:45 pm
It means about as much as college signing day. Which means about a minus 3 on a scale of 1-10. The NFL is not about football anymore. It is just whatever they can market to the low information masses and make more money.
I care nothing about it.,
But the NFL lost me in 1984 when they allowed the Colts to abandon Baltimore and keep the Colts name. One of the biggest travesties in all of sports.
The Ravens? Ugggghhhh…give me a break..

“Polk at 8 is a travesty.”
Polk gets impugned because he did not win a Natty but no question he was a great coach (he took three different schools to Omaha…Ga. Southern , State and Georgia).
At State he had at least half dozen squads that could have won a NC (1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1989-was probably better than the ‘85 team, 1992, 1997). But it takes an incredibly great team, being hot at the right time and some luck to win it all. Unfortunately for him all those stars never lined up in the same season.
He was a master at growing the game. He traveled to high schools back in the ‘70’s/80’s pushing them to create better programs, not just in MS but really all over. He published a book on the fundamentals of baseball. He was able to get our fan base to buy into baseball. The first ever ESPN college baseball game was televised from Dudy Noble.
He is the Godfather of SEC baseball.
Bertman was a great coach and is the best ever in the conference. But Polk is number 2 as he showed the rest of the conference that baseball could be an important and great sport. Before him it was an afterthought.
There was an occasion when Ole Miss promoted their head baseball coach to an assistant football coach back in the day.

“Tyrone Prothro’s catch.”
I was at that game. About two weeks after Katrina. We were sitting in that end zone.
USM had totally dominated the game in the first half. Led 21-3 late in the second quarter. Bama had a 4th and 35. And Prothro made that impossible catch at the inch line for a first down. Bama scored on the last play of the half to cut it to 21-10. Then obviously the whole momentum of the game changed.

A couple of great moments include Mike Witt’s perfect game for the California Angels against the Texas Rangers in the ole Arlington Stadium in 1984. It was 1-0 game as well so the pressure was even more heightened on him as the game progressed.
Also saw Cal Ripken hit for the cycle also in Arlington Stadium in 1984. Came to bat in the top of the ninth inning needing a HR. Hit a frozen rope down the LF line for a homer. Was a really cool moment.

State 6, Bama 3…November 1, 1980 in Jackson, MS. Bama had a 28 game winning streak, 26 game SEC Conference streak and a 22 game win streak over State. They were back to back NC in 1978 & 1979 and were headed for a third in 1980.
Bama got down to State’s three yard line in the last seconds of the game only to lose the ball on a fumble by Jacobs after a monster hit by Tyrone Keys.
Stadium was absolute pandemonium in the fourth quarter and at the end strangers were hugging strangers. It was so loud Bama’s QB could not be heard calling signals.
Enjoy the last couple of minutes of the game.

Thank you for sharing.
His sister is choir director for our church. She is every bit as talented as he is but just chose to be an educator instead. Smart and very kindhearted as well.
We have met him as well. Great talent and very personable.

re: ESPN: UCLA in talks with QB Nico Iamaleava for less money

What would be more appropriate would be for him to pay a school money to come to their school for the privilege of playing football.
re: Marcus Depree vs. Nico Iamaleava

Completely different situations and circumstances. Not even in the same stratosphere. I doubt that a book will be written lama as was about Marcus.

Before this is over with he will be paying a team to take him in.
re: SEC Tournament Locations

The baseball will be a single elimination tournament this year. Seeds 9-16 will have to win 5 games to win it. Seeds 5-8 4 games and seeds 1-4 3 games. So theoretically the highest seeds don’t have to burn all their pitching to win it. Plus each team will get an off day either Thursday or Friday depending on their seed.
So overall it is a better setup this year. Teams will have opportunities to win it without completely killing their staffs. A low seeded team can make a run while a higher seed can probably give some younger or little used pitchers an opportunity to pitch on a big stage.
Plus a lot of baseball for the fans between Tuesday and Sunday.

“Why did Will go to Miss State instead of LSU?”
When Clark was being recruited, Polk had already been at State for 5-6 years with two CWS appearances (1979-1981). State cared about baseball and we regularly led the nation in attendance.
Baseball at LSU was an afterthought until Bertman was hired in 1984. Polk’s time at State started in 1976 so he was already established as the HC and had the program going well at that point.
Plus Clark enjoyed his time at State, he was a hunter and fisherman so there were ample opportunities for him to do those outside of school. And in fact he still has deer hunting property not far from State’s campus(Noxubee County) even in the present day.

As a State alum/fan who saw Clark in college and the MLB, he had a good career but I am not quite sure that it is HofF worthy. Close but not quite enough. I know he retired prematurely to spend more time with his son. Had he played another 3-4 years, I think it would have been a no brainer.
I am one that believes Palmeiro belongs in the HofF. Yes he failed one test but you can look at his body through the years and tell he was not regular user of steroids. I honestly believe he was purposefully setup after his testimony before Congress. Otherwise he was at the end of his career and he would have not jeopardized his whole career by knowingly using steroids.

“It’s funny how seemingly insignificant actions can affect history. Skip obviously resurrected college baseball in the sec when he went to LSU and I think the focus on baseball in this conference is a direct result of him prioritizing it at LsU and LdU administration for taking it seriously.”
This is laughable. Polk created the interest in SEC baseball. The very first ESPN College Baseball game televised was at State at Dudy Noble Field.
It is incredibly hard to win a NC in baseball.
Polk was not a choke artist.
State had teams in 1979, 84, 85, 89, 90, 92, 97 and 2007 under Polk that could have won a NC. State did not but it was not because Polk choked. It takes a great team, being hot at the right time and some luck to win it all.
Lots of credit to Skip and LSU for their great success in the 1990’s. But that in no way diminishes Polk and State from what we did in the 1970’s and 1980’s. That actually set the stage for what LSU did later.

“Polk not winning a national title when he had Clark and Palmero is insane”
A bit of bad luck cost State the NC in 1985.
We won the first two games of the CWS and Gene Morgan was sailing along with a 4-1 lead against Texas when a line drive hit his ankle. The whole momentum of the game shifted when he was unable to continue.
We eventually lost that game.
Then lost to MIA 5-4 on a walk off the next day.
Had we beat TX, I believe we would have won the NC has Jeff Brantley would have been fresh for the championship game.
That team had four future MLB all stars on it.
Clark, Palmeiro, Brantley and Thigpen.
