Remember bear Bryant could only pull off a .610 winning percentage there.

Trying to compare something that happened over 65 years ago to something that is happening today is completely ignorant. Interesting that you left off the part about Bear Bryant having an undefeated season, winning the southwest conference and having a Heisman Trophy winner while he was coaching at A&M.

OP, Jimbo should have been fired last year. They gave it one more year to see if the Petrino experiment would work. Do you think that if we had not made any changes, all those players would not have gone in the portal?

Going 8-4, 5-7, and 7-5 the last three seasons with the amount of talent we had on campus was unacceptable. Simple as that. A change was needed.

Yes it was worth it, you dont let short term decisions override long term ones, some guys going to the portal are necessary collateral to bring in a new coach and hopefully new culture.

Good to great OL

Our offensive line was trash and would continue to be so under Jimbo and Addazio's coaching. They werent getting any better next season unless a major change was made.

Maybe the status quo was the way to go for the time being

Nah, 8-4 jokes aside, we are just like any other program. Trying to climb the mountain and win it all, the blue bloods dont like it when someone challenges the status quo and that's why everybody would love it if we just kept doing the same thing for the same mediocre results.

with Texas joining the SEC next year, but Sarkisian vs Elko is probably a mismatch too

Is one or two extra victories worth $77 million? And what if Elko is not an upgrade? Scary.

So y’all ridicule A&M for how ever many losses in a row on the road, being State’s bitch most years, and not winning the division with a coach that had been there 6 years, but firing him is panicking?

This is some mental gymnastics.

The mistake was hiring Jimbo in the first place. The brilliance of Jamies Winston blinded y'all to a forest of red flags.

Hard to say they "jumped the gun" when they fired a guy after 6 seasons with no real success on the field, whose win percentage has been on the downslide

I guess you could say the 7th year would be different but there is no reason to really believe that

I absolutely think letting him go this year was the right thing to do.

O line play was horrible and he wasn't changing the coach. The offense looked much snappier with the exit of Fisher. That means Petrino was clearly muzzled and then he was able to do his thing. Couple that with a 3rd string QB.

Yes, we will have defections. But we now have exited a coaching situation of stagnation and lethargy. Elko brings excitement.

You are looking at it from the wrong perspective.. by doing it this year, they are playing with house money against Texas next year.

They will be expected to lose that game now, but if they win, they will gain momentum and have something to sell.

They may argue this fact, but their big money boosters care a whole lot about that game next year, and this gives them an easy out if they lose.

1st year coach.. just wait until he gets his guys.. next year is the year.. rinse and repeat.

Just my two cents..
This is it right here. Having another disappointing season was irrelevant to Jimbo's firing with the absurd amount of money on the line. It took Texas beating Bama and looking like we could possibly make the playoffs this year to spur the aggy decision makers to cut their losses and start over.

Had to be done.

Most of those players stuck around this year on promises that last year was the anomaly. This year proved it wasn't. The transfer portal situation we are seeing now would have happened with or without Jimbo, and honestly, I dont blame them. Elite players don't sign up for 4 years of mediocrity. Most have 2 years left, they're going to try to go somewhere with a shot to compete now.

At least without Jimbo, we can started building for the next phase of the program.

OK.

It looked like we were getting a national championship winning coach. But it didn’t work out. We saw for ourselves that the coaching and game planning left a lot to be desired. Once Elko left, the defense was not able to cover for Jimbo anymore.

Just got to move forward instead of treading water.

Yep, they might as well have given Jimbo another year or two and waited to find a championship caliber coach.

Where do they keep the championship caliber coaches in stock? Lots of programs have been shopping for those things.

Hiring a coach is just a roll of the dice. Hire the best staff you can, give them the support they need, and hope for the best.

They lit tens upon tens of millions of dollars on fire. The only thing of real value they are walking away with is Manziels heisman. That whole deal was electric but that’s it.

It had everything to do with the Longhorns.

If they lose next year, the narrative is well what did you expect with a new coaching in breaking in his system and getting his players into the program.

If they fired Jimbo after he lost to the Longhorns then the narrative is that UT ended the Aggie coach.

One is better than the other for public perception.
