A number of universities actually do that....maybe not so much major in football or basketball, but if they major in sports related degrees, their meetings and practices can count for credit hours towards their degrees.....

The answer to that is "critical thinking" hours.
Every degree requires bullshite classes that won't be used in the real world and every student has to still do them.

Just give them $150,000 and let them spend it however they see fit as long as they are enrolled in classes. Go ahead and teach them money management from early on. If they blow it on a car and can't travel with the team then that gives them a valuable lesson.

So you basically want to put a bunch of idiots into the world, who will be broke by the time they are 30. Many already are. If you want to do that, why even have a football program associated with the university. Just create a developmental league, which will ultimately damage college football. It amazes me people want to destroy college football and turn it into the NFL. Not to even mention the vast majority will never even sniff the NFL.

So far, the NFL has said that they aren't worth it.
The CFL can take them. But again... 18-20 year olds tend to get beat up by grown arse men.

That number reflects the school’s expenses, not the benefit to athletes. I mean seriously, are we counting gas to get the bus from the hotel to the stadium/arena as a benefit? This list is largely composed of expenses for the program the school wishes to create. If we’re calling this some sort of benefit analysis we might as well add in cost for fertilizing the grass on the field or changing lightbulbs in the arena.

Do you guys ever receive an email asking for "academic donations", and just out of curiosity, would you know what the total dollar figure is for the entire football dept. staff? And that includes every coach, trainer, etc. I bet that figure is more than what your or any other big time football schools' academic donations are.

they SHOULD leave college with zero debt, a degree, connections the average student could only dream about, and having spent 4 years showing potential employers in their dream field what they are capable of with exposure that you simply can't put a price on.
I'm not jumping into the debate here, I just want to make sure to make sure people remember that these costs include the costs of being an athlete. In other words, I assume that uniforms, travel, etc., costs that wouldn't be imposed on the student-athlete in the first place if he or she wasn't representing the universities as an athlete, count toward this figure. So those costs shouldn't be included in the argument.

At Alabama, it's roughly 25% of every incoming football class. Additionally, there are even more that will go into coaching at all levels, supporting staffs, broadcasting, training, and even agency, where their time as an athlete provides a base of knowledge, networking, and authenticity.
It's a great base for those who wish to pursue a career in sports related fields. For the others, it's a path to a free education in whatever other direction they choose.

The OP doesn't say "benefit". It says "cost". That's why they are asking for donations.
But the dollar amount of the benefits are enormous for a student on an athletic scholarship.

Completely agree. It amazes me as well. Expand the playoff. Pay the players. Allow transfers with no restrictions. Lazy narratives that people buy into because of a naive quest for “fairness.”
