Just got an email from the Crimson Tide Foundation asking for more donations. In the email it shows how much it cost for a student-athlete.

This includes Scholarship, travel expenses, athletic facilities, equipment, nutritional expenses, and general operating expenses.
It doesn't include coaches salaries.

If this is the average of all student athletes then you can assume the football player cost would be way above that average.

Just thought it was interesting to see an actual number put out on what a scholarship is worth. ~$500,000 over 4 years.

*Insert joke about Alabama's scholarships being worth more than everyone else's.

$500k for the football players, maybe. Email them back and ask what the costs of the women’s swim team are.

this is why i don't put any stock into the whole "athletes are exploited and deserve to be paid" argument.

they SHOULD leave college with zero debt, a degree, connections the average student could only dream about, and having spent 4 years showing potential employers in their dream field what they are capable of with exposure that you simply can't put a price on.

This is probably true for only football and basketball players.

Any other Men's sport doesn't get a full ride scholarship. So Unless they get other scholarships, or parents can help pay, they will be leaving college with student loan debt

Tuition, room, board, books for an out of state student at Alabama is ~$45,000 a year. Don't think they get an extra $80k worth of stuff when you think of all the travel they go on, special facilities, equipment, ect.. I could see it adding up easily.

And your Athletic Department makes ~130,000 per student athlete.

Y’all are in the green, like most in the SEC but not most nationally. Any extra money only helps though, feel free to donate but y’all arent hurting

Not when you are including every student athlete. I think you are probably right when it comes to the football players. You also have to keep in mind who is sending you this. I don't think it would be odd for them to embellish the numbers when asking for donations.

Not that they have to be paid, but that they can be. Don't make a rule that prevents people from getting their market value.

Don't you believe in freedom and the free market?

They also won't be part of a team providing a profitable revenue stream for the school.

That is typical of how Universities are padding the books to justify tuition hikes.

Does it cost $45K per year to educate one student ? Most of the infrastructure has been paid for years by generations of taxpayers.
How much of the facilities are paid by ticket holders, TV revenue and Conference payouts ?
They keep asking because they know people will keep giving.

One thing I wish student athletes should be able to do is major in football or basketball and let their meetings and practices count as coursework because that is why most of them are there in the first place. It makes no sense why some of these kids who are academically inept or aren't willing have to take up space in college classes they don't want to be in.

I absolutely believe in free market (it's where I earn my living). That said, who determines the players' value? The highest bidder or the NCAA? If it's NCAA, how do they determine value of one player over another? If it is highest bidder, then the margin between the "haves" and the "have nots" will grow even larger.
