That other teams sucked isn't Tennessee's problem.

You haven't watched 98 Tennessee

As was noted, teams played 11 games. Winning 10 games was a big deal.
That 1998 Tennessee team was a classic old school SEC football team - great defense at all 3 levels, clutch/gamer QB, stable of backs, great offensive line and some scary wideouts. After they beat Florida they also took on that "we're a team of destiny and we won't lose" mentality.
Syracuse was very good and the Carrier Dome was a hard place to win. That State team had dudes all over on defense.
They got a little lucky with the FSU QB situation, but hell thats part of it.

SEC used to be really bad in the 90's, not just LSU as most of us LSU fans believe.
I don't mean you, specifically, but younger fans don't realize how ridiculously good the SEC has been since the turn of the millennium. No conference has ever come close to being so dominant in football, including the pre-millennium SEC.
LSU has simply made the biggest improvement since the 90's. One might argue for Alabama, but Alabama was still a Blueblood back then.

Wasn’t Florida states starting Qb out of the title game too

UCLA was the best team in the nation.
Their offense was phenomenal, but they weren’t winning a National Championship with that god awful defense

The only other team that should even be mentioned as a possibility is Ohio State, but they were upset by Saban's Spartans late that season.

Nutt underachieved with Darren McFadden and Felix Jones.
Yeah... He kind of had a habit of that. The 2006 team is the most talented team of my lifetime and one of the most talented BCS-era SEC teams, yet Nutt always found a way to find the banana peel and had an absolute garbage Casey Dick out there QB. But never developed that position at all.
If they had even a mediocre passing QB in 06, they would have gone 11-1 and won the SEC. Instead they lost to LSU and Florida in the title hand, then mailed it in in the bowl game.
Don't know if Arkansas will every forks a team with that kind of talent again.

I know you're mad about McFadden getting shut down, but believing this is nonsense.
Florida DL had one of the best pass rush combos since 2000 in Harvey and Moss, top 5 MLB in school history in Siler, NCAA leader in interceptions (Ryan Smith) and a top 5 safety in school history in Nelson.
If Leak doesn't make 2 stupid interceptions of his own, Florida wins by 40.

UT, FSU, and UF were all very comparable that year. Any of the 3 could have beaten the others on any given day.
That would have been a great CFP scenario with UT, FSU, and UF (mulligan game vs both), and tOSU.
tOSU had a really good team as well and were likely the more deserving #2 team if not for that unknown coach at Sparty upsetting them.

Hijacking this thread for a moment, 1998 was my senior year at State. Me and some buddies went to every game. It was surreal to be in the Georgia Dome that night. #3 UCLA and #1 Kansas State had been beaten earlier that day. We watched UCLA get beat at SEC Fanfare and Aggy beat K-State right before our game started.
State's defense played lights out for 3.5 quarters then fell apart. Our offense couldn't do anything. We lost the game, but this 4th quarter moment was amazing. The way the game was going, we thought we could win.

Took a bad play call by Houston Nutt and a fluke fumble for them to get past Arkansas
What sucks even worse is that a game winning FG that went wide was called good in our game against Miss St. We would have had a rematch against Tenner in the championship game if not for that.

So Tennessee was the LSU of the 90’s. Always in second place because more often than not they couldn’t get past Spurrier and Florida, like LSU with Saban and Alabama.
Well, if you ignore the multiple SEC and National titles, sure, I guess LSU is just like 1990s Tennessee.

Fulmer took over during Spurrier's reign, so it's like comparing LSU to Alabama once Saban got it rolling. And in that light, pretty accurate.
Tennessee (1993-2004) (11 seasons)
- 119-31 (79%) Overall
- 77-19 (80%) SEC
- 4 SEC East Titles (1997, 1998, 2001, 2004)
- 2 SEC Titles (1997, 1998)
- 1 National Title (1998)
- 9 Top 25 Finishes
- 6 Top 10 Finishes
- 4-8 vs Florida
LSU (2009-2020) (11 seasons)
- 117-37 (76%) Overall
- 65-26 (71%) SEC
- 2 SEC West Titles (2011, 2019)
- 2 SEC Titles (2011, 2019)
- 1 National Title (2019)
- 10 Top 25 Finishes
- 4 Top 10 Finishes
- 3-10 vs Alabama

8-4 Syracuse
That was a good team and a true road game for Tennessee. Syracuse turned around and steamrolled the defending national champ Michigan in the Big House the next week.

11-2 FSU
This is one where you can say they got a bit lucky. They caught FSU playing either their 2nd or 3rd string QB, and it should have been Kansas State anyways if they didn't trip on their own dicks in the Big 12 title game.
1998 Tennessee had a very, very good team and a loaded roster.
