Tells USA Today, “I think the ship has sailed. It’s run its course.”

I agree.

Thoughts?

He's right. There's no real point to it anymore. Just one more thing the playoff and conference realignment have ruined.

Yeah I’d do away with it. Aside from it not being necessary it’s also just a huge advantage for UGA since it’s always in Atlanta.

In the last two years, it nearly eliminated a potential playoff team, and cost a team a higher seed and a possible bye in the playoffs. The game has hurt the league twice now.

It was innovative when it was created and allowed for a regular season Championship type experience and was a large reason for the financial and competitive advantage that the SEC enjoyed for years. None of the benefits of the game exist anymore in the current landscape. It's time to evolve with the current era, give the SEC title to the regular season champion, and not have the game potentially damage the prospects of potential playoff teams.

How should we crown an end-of-season 3 way (or more) tie if they all beat each other during the season?.........and don't use the tie word in the explanation.
PS- There are no ties in football.

Who really GAS?

Alabama won the regular season last year.

Does anybody care? No.

Didn't we lose some key players to injuries in the SEC champ game a few times that would have made a difference in the playoffs or National Champ game? Wasn't Shaun Dion Hamilton one in 2016? Metchie in 2023. I think there was a running back or another defensive player somewhere in between that just killed us

When the day finally comes, it's too bad Roy Kramer won't be around to see his baby get aborted.

Sankey will throw a hissy fit to keep it because $$$$ He doesn’t GAS about the players, the schools, or the league, just the paycheck.

In the current landscape of the playoffs, it is harder to make a case for the conference championship game than for it. Too much downside to it for both teams.

Presidents of the conference should have never allowed Sankey to be obligated to espn on broadcasting rights.

Should never allowed Texas in the conference. SEC don’t need their market and money.

Sankey should be fired for the officiating alone. Under his watch the officiating is probably the worst of any conference. 3rd dwn flags are almost automatic in deciding games.

Agreed. I would prefer a world with conference championship games and a smaller playoff.

But unfortunately that world no longer exists. Big playoff fields make conference championship games pointless.

Be that the case, then why even have conferences? Hell, isn't sport itself, about winning?
I'm old enough to appreciate the national exposure and prestige gained by being a member of one of the elite conferences, and to win the championship was the goal of all the schools.
By the way, where did nearly all the rivalries come from?

SECCG should be stopped. No need in it. Game hurts the SEC teams more than helps.

I agree - I was there at Legion Field for the first one and it set the precedent for championship football for the next 30 years. It was a marketing phenomenon that established the SEC as the premier conference in college football.

But, it has run its course and serves no useful purpose now. Last year I thought it harmed Alabama greatly especially from a physically ready-to-compete perspective. I also don't believe that Georgia benefitted from the extra game either. Eliminate the game and few fans would miss it. Just give us a few more weeks to get fired up for the real playoffs -

Now that conference winner/automatic bids nonsense has been done away with after one year (that would have allowed 8-4 Duke a playoff spot if they'd won,) there truly is no reason for conference title games. ESPN will try to milk every penny out of it until SEC teams say enough is enough, so who knows when that will be.

The game has definitely lost its luster in the expanded playoff era. I say get rid of it and give the crown to the regular season champion.

It's still the 5 highest ranked conference champions that get automatic bids. They just did away with the top 4 seeds having to be champions.
