Alabama is adding to its defensive staff, hiring Trent Simpson from Oklahoma as an assistant defensive line coach.

Simpson spent the last four seasons at Oklahoma, including three as a defensive analyst.

He will work under defensive line coach Freddie Roach and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, helping develop Alabama’s defensive front during spring practice.

I had never heard of this guy before today. OU has a ton of analysts. We just hired the current DC from Northern Arizona to be an "assistant edge coach".

We (Bama) did the same with an assistant OLB coach that was a DC at a FCS California school a couple weeks ago. Seems to be common for the bigger programs. Seems like a good strategy.

This screams that Bama desperately needs someone who can actually coach a DL. Roach is a program guy and a great recruiter, but everyone at Bama knows he's a bad line coach.
