If Saban had waited a month

The portal would still reopen, but it would be too late for players to enroll for spring semester at another program. This may have made a huge difference.
ETA Disclaimer: This isn’t a “it’s Saban’s fault” post. Just pointing out the still unforeseen consequences of the transfer portal.

This type of shite is why he retired in the first place.

And by then Deboer has a new contract in place. If he waited a month, we wouldn't have been able to hire a coach worth a shite.

Like entering the stock market, there is never a "perfect" time.

So you would have all your players but be coached by rocky and bulwinkle? That’s where we would be.

If anyone wants to point a finger at CNS, (which I dont suggest anyone should) you could say his inability to find 1 coach to keep, and mentor to take over one day would have been very beneficial.
Again, where is Jeremy Pruitt today if he stays with CNS to the end ?
He was hired by Tenn in 2018 - He would have only had to serve five years to make all his dreams come true. ooof

So Saban should have waited until after spring practice and retired, leading to a Mike Price firing type timeline.
I dunno Jim.

Pruitt’s dreams evaporated like smoke when Saban retired. He is never going to be back on staff now…kind of like…what’s that dudes name? Oh yeah…Kiffin.

Then we wouldn’t have gotten a coach worth a damn.
This was gonna happen no matter when Saban hung it up. Just best to bite the bullet now and go ahead and get it out of the way

If he does that then Michigan gets first choice of available coaches after Harbaugh takes an NFL job, every other available coach who is worth a shite gets an extension, and then we are bigly fricked.
There is no way Saban could have timed it that would have softened the blow. It just would have made it hit us in a different spot. The NCAA has set up the portal to totally buttfrick any program going through a coaching change.

I’m not trying to point blame at Saban. I’m simply saying it might have looked a lot different if he had waited a few weeks. As others have said, we also may have missed on DeBoer.
What does matter is if Harbaugh leaves in a few weeks and this potential admissions hurdle keeps players at UM.

Flame away but Saban’s primary obligation at this point in his life should be to himself and his family, not the University of Alabama football program. He gave all he had in him to give to it for 17 years. He earned the right to do what he did and leave when he left, regardless of the consequences.

No problem with Saban retiring now. He’s earned the right to do whatever he wants. The biggest issue is transfer portal rules. Bama will sit through three transfer portal sessions in four months. If a coach leaves, retires or is fired prior to spring practice there should be no 30 day window. The players could have practiced through spring or decided to sit out because they know they’re going to transfer. Downs, Procotor and most of these players that transferred know they will find homes and with plenty of NIL.

Yeah, locking them into UA and hiring a subpar coach is the right way... any coach worth their salt would have signed contract extensions / been unavailable if he waited too much longer. And having a bunch of 'trapped' and pissed off kids would not bode well for the spring portal...

If Harbaugh leaves for the NFL, do you think Michigan will have to hire from within?

Have to no, but probably will based on who is available. I mean they may go after Brian Kelly but he is not an upgrade over Harbaugh and he just signed a new massive contract I thought. His buy out may be more than they want to take on. Likely they hire from within hoping to retain talent.

Agree, and the other question is does DeBoer’s current roster situation deter future coaches from jumping from program to program in the future?

Saban gave 17yrs of the best football I’ve ever experienced as a Bama fan even all the way back to the Bryant yrs when Bama was kicking arse then.
It was time for Saban to retire plain and simple and there’s never a perfect way to leave. He didn’t make it about him, no farewell tour to make it about him and I appreciate that as a fan. He left the program better than what he inherited for the next coach. Saban did it the the right way
