I definitely think we should add another 4, but if Oats doesn't trust Jemison at the 4 he shouldn't keep him around and Allen certainly has the size and defensive ability to play there.
Agree on Jemison, though he's got a lot of work to do to be able to defend the paint. Allen would never stay if we planned on playing him at the 4, and I wouldn't blame him a bit for leaving if we did.

Unless Oats thinks we can stretch Bristow and Garrison out at the 4 (and that they'll be competent enough shooting the ball to play there), I think we have to go get someone.

Positions covered in that group are 2-4 though, essentially meaning a starter/backup at each spot.
That group is wildly undersized for what we need a 4 to do. Our most efficient teams had 4s that could guard 2-5 (Clowney, Nelson, Dioubate). I don't feel good about anyone in that lineup trying to guard a true big.

Allen has to be the plan at PG, and he could do it. Could you imagine his draft stock as a PG with his size? We could easily sell him on that, plus a healthy NIL, to keep him.
Either that's the plan or we are pretty certain he's gone. It's one or the other.

I'd still like a dynamic 4 though.

An Allen/Samuels/Cloer/Jemison/Garrison lineup is intriguing. Plenty of offense and a lot of size/switchability defensively.
So assuming Allen returns and we get Cloer, we'd have more wings than a Baumhower's:

- Amari Allen
- London Jemison
- Cole Cloer
- Qayden Samuels
- Tarris Bouie
- Jaxon Richardson

Interesting

Yeah, I’m pessimistic about the portal because the costs for sure-things, drop-in and flourish players is just too high.
The other thing that has to be a nightmare to manage are these mid-to-late first-round type guys who may or may not come back depending on draft grade (Philon last year, Allen this year). You either assume they leave and use up all your funds, risking them going elsewhere if they decide to come back, or you hold some in reserve hoping to lure them back and risk them staying in the draft, leaving you undermanned and underspent on the roster.
So we're set at the 5. Now need a dynamic 4 and a couple guards.

I wanted Phillips.
To me Cade only makes sense to pair with a 5 who can shoot (i.e. Sherrell).

It’s gonna be close
Not sure what would lead anyone to this conclusion. We haven't won a PL match since December 28. A draw or two to close out the next few weeks won't save us from relegation.

Both would allow you to become more athletic and physical. But neither are going to give you anything on the offensive end. Neither can stretch the defense at all.
We don't need the 5s to stretch the defense. We need them to protect the rim and catch lobs.

Will have to be paired with a stretch 4 who can play.
I'm starting to think this is the biggest key to the system. A 4 who is a multi-level scorer and also does a bunch of dirty work (guard multiple positions, rebound at a high level, and help protect the rim). Our most efficient KenPom teams under Oats all had those guys: 1) #4, 2022-23 (Clowney/Gurley); 2) #6, 2024-25 (Nelson/Dioubate); 3) #9, 2020-21 (Herb Jones)

Note that during those years, the guys who spent the most time at the 5 were Bediako, Pringle, Omoruyi, Bruner, and Rojas. Not exactly a superstar list. The 5 spot just doesn't require an NBA prospect. Catch lobs, rebound, affect the rim.
Yeah, that will never happen. The US will play along to some degree with the EU when it comes to their chief export, which is asinine regulations. You think China is going to do that?
Not gonna lose the NLD next season since it won't be played. :nana:

Freeman and Dak would be decent starters. Really need depth though.
Freeman and Dak would kind of replicate that Bediako/Clowney look from 2022-23. I like that a lot. Add in Jasper Johnson and our potential starting 5 would be very similar:

- Johnson ~ Jaden Bradley (young creative guard with good size and defensive upside)
- Holloway ~ Mark Sears (veteran scoring and creative guard with great 3P shot, minus defender)
- Allen ~ Brandon Miller (NBA caliber creative wing who can score from deep or get to the rim, tenacious defender, good rebounder)
- Freeman ~ Noah Clowney (well-rounded 4 who can score at multiple levels and rebound and defend multiple positions well)
- Dak ~ Bediako (long, rim-protecting 5 who provides a lob threat on offense and is a major defensive disruptor in the lane)
If he ain’t wearing Crimson I hope he fails hard at his next stop.
I like Phillips a lot. I think this represents a bit of a change in thought on roster construction. IMO we’ve been far too enamored with how guys project from 3P range and have focused on maximizing shooting, which has come at great cost to physicality and defense.

5 blue collar guys with 4 who shoot 30%+ from deep is more ideal than 5 dudes who shoot 35%+ from deep while getting bullied around the gym.

Oats has to be more versatile on offense if he wants to win a NC. He doesn’t have to completely go away from his system, but he has to develop a half court game that can score when legs are tired.
The system is fine, we have to get better defensively. Michigan suffocated everyone they played in the tournament, which is why they were able to win when they went cold.

The #1 overall seed team we had in 2023 was actually our worst team in the last 5 seasons from an offensive efficiency standpoint, but was the best equipped to win a title because they were top 3 in defensive efficiency. We beat a ton of good teams while shooting like crap that year. Have to get back to a place where our 3-point shooting largely dictates the margin of victory, not whether we win or lose.

What sucks about losing Sherrell
May not be gone just yet.
Here's how this is going to play out:

1. Trump makes threat
2. Iran won't surrender or do a deal
3. We bomb a few more things
4. Trump declares that what he threatened (whether it's "regime change" or Iran being "wiped out" or some such) actually happened
5. Start back at 1
Has Judge Boasberg ordered Trump to return the weapons officer back to Iran yet?
I like Sherrell a lot, and appreciate what he's done in his time here. The issue is he's going to command a ton of cash in the open market because of his ability to step out and hit the 3, and Oats' system just doesn't require that out of a 5 to be good. Our best team ever had a Bediako/Pringle tandem at the 5 spot. If you can get two similar type players for the cost of one Sherrell you absolutely have to consider it.

I just don’t get it..
Been expected for a while. The tampering on this one alone was insane.
