Nothing new. These kids have always chased the $$$. They would come to Bama because it was their best chance to go to the NFL. Now with NIL, we may not be the best chance to make $$ upfront. Lots of families/kids will select instant gratification and something known over something unknown (i.e. NFL). We've lost an advantage we used to have and that's it.

This is not a discredit to DeBoer. He has just started. We have to give the man time this ain't on him.

At this point, 'development' = I want more money.

CFB has honestly been ruined, and it's really sad that ours is one of the first prolific rosters to suffer from the NIL/Portal nonsense in the offseason. Kirby retiring may bring a similar issue... but that's about it.

You can be a smart arse all you want but with the amount of people that are members that “$45.00“ adds up to a whole lot yet we can’t seem to retain key players. If you’re not comprehending what I’m saying then sorry for you and if it’s just you being an arse today isn’t the day. You are right about the collective though they need to be more transparent on exactly where and who the money is going to that’s for sure. When a person isn’t rich or well off but loves a university enough to pay a measly “$45.00” it definitely bothers you when the money is not used the way you were told it would be.

Kirby retiring would absolutely decimate UGAs roster just as ours has been with Saban retiring.

Thought we’d done enough on defensive coaching hires to keep him, which means at the end of the day it’s about money and negative recruiting. Kirby is ruthless, Sark not so much…but he’s being driven by the Texas boosters, who are.

College football is starting to become a joke. I mean look at UW as an example, I hate them ( I don't ) but in a football sense I do, and they have 1 returning starter on offense because their coach left and 75% of the team hit the portal. How is that allowed? Teams are 1-2 decisions away from losing their entire team. It's wild that a college player can just enter the portal yearly to shop the best deal. You see it all the time with these kids too that will enter the portal, then come back, they are clearly just "seeing" what they can get. The parents have to be the issue too I mean lets call a spade a spade, most of these kids come from nothing and this nil money is a way to feed their families which is a positive but it's stunning to me, all these parents will be quoted in articles now talking about their kids' transfer. Insane. You should have to sign a deal to get your nil.

I.E. Lets say Bama or Oregon offers a 5 star recruit 1m , well you only get 250k a year for 4 years and if you enter the portal then you claw back some money or you don't recieve the rest of the money. I've been guilty in the past of dancing on Bamas grave, but that's just because you guys win so god damn much lol. But there has to be a way to stop this. I read over 2500 kids in the portal since Jan 1 or something lol. 2500!!!

This one sucks. We are losing our best player to a rival team and have no one to replace him. This makes the team demonstrably worse.

frick.

By then they’ll have adjusted the transfer portal and fixed the one way 30 day window bs we’re dealing with now

What pisses me off about this is supposedly Downs being so "close" to Saban. If he truly cared about Saban he would've stayed. It's all bullshite and these kids are loyal to nothing else but the bag being thrown at them by these other schools. At this point, give me a roster of kids that love Alabama and want to play for Alabama. We've got a solid coaching staff by everything we can see, and they haven't even had a chance to prove themselves on the field. They deserve our support and loyalty, not these kids who are paid mercenaries that go to the highest bidder.

Absolutely. I'm on board. I will love Alabama football no matter what and I have enjoyed a lifetime's worth of winning from 1989 until now.

But make no mistake, we aren't going to win with a bunch of 3 stars "willing to run through a brick wall for Bama."

It is what it is.

They talk about DeBoer "making up for talent" with his coaching. I hope he does...but heretofore it was done in the minor leagues (Pac 12). Yes he beat Texas who is stacked...and that's a good sign. But game in, game out in the SEC? Probably not sustanable long term.

I'm not sure what the answer is. I'm disgusted by the new environment. I'm not sure we have the wherewithall financialy to compete in it, financially.

I've said forever...we don't have these problems in college baseball. Why? Because they are college students. People who only care about a pro career in baseball have development leagues.

People love high school football. They'd love Bama just as much if college football were to ever go back to a more true amateur status.

Just a rumor, but, word on the street is that Kirby was in Caleb’s ear before Saban announced retirement. Didn’t you see Kirby hawk him down after the sec championship game and embrace him like a lover. Lol.

I agree. I think the problem is a vicious circle too... You want me to donate money to Caleb Downs last year because he was a fantastic player and we want to retain him? Cool!

Now, he transfers. Do you think I'm ever going to donate money to another player? No.

It's honestly a vicious circle, and I truly believe that all these kids transferring are actually going to end up getting less money overall (from true NIL, not just paychecks), because nobody wants to support a mercenary. Like I said, I bought a Downs jersey. My mistake. I can't wear it if he leaves, and I'll be very unlikely to buy one in the future. The NIL portion is getting destroyed... so why even call it NIL. It's P2P.

I personally think that transferring should exempt you from making any NIL money for 1 year... in any form or fashion.

This are players that left after Saban retired.

It's the new coaches job to keep the team together. It is a failure, there is no way to spin that it is not. Downs is the best player on Alabama's roster and DeBoer had plenty of time to get him to stay, he is going to the portal. Massive failure by DeBoer.

Absolutely. The only money I would give, would be after they graduate from UA, as an appreciation for their commitment to our football program.

It doesn't matter who is in his ear. It is about the money he can make. The kid doesn't give a damn about Alabama nor does 75% of the others on our roster.

It is about Money. Get Real.

Frick him. We want kids that want to play for the Alabama brand. I don't care if they are all 3 stars. And when they are coached up and beat a bunch of 5 stars that are only in it for the money then what's their excuse going to be?

I agree. I won't listen to anyone spin this towards anything other than money.

A person of Downs' talent will be a 1st round pick regardless of where he plays. It has nothing to do with development. It clearly has nothing to do with his teammates and friends. It's money.

The $45 I was referring to is from the University of Alabama reaching out for donations. It was a tongue in check response. I am fairly certain that the University can not spend funds towards NIL.

It's just about being organized and transparent. We will need to see some changes with our NIL since we've lost our GOAT. I don't think that's an issue.

With that being said..... People who keep saying "this isn't the day." You can be a Bama fan without this Caleb Downs ruining your day. We've been on a heater for awhile now and we haven't had a ton of unknowns for 17 years. We are due to have some unknowns, now. Enjoy the ride.
