Our only loss up to that point had been to Reggie Bush and the boys when McFadden was out with a broken toe.
Bush was in the NFL. That was USC's first game post-Bush and Leinart.

2006 Auburn was pretty egregious and hilarious as well.
It was similar to UGA in 2005. Losing to Florida and Auburn, but even if undefeated, I’m not sure they would have jumped Texas and USC.

Shockley spraining his knee against Arkansas easily explains away both of those losses. He missed the Florida game and was immobile against Auburn.
Either way, you're right, that team wouldn't have jumped Texas or USC and I don't think they were good enough to beat either of them anyways.

2005 would be the year that comes to mind and the major reason was the injury to DJ Shockley in the Arkansas game. We were ranked 4th at that time, lost to UF 14-10 using Joe Tereshinski at QB (Who scored our only TD by catching a pass), lost to Aub 31-30 with Shockley playing with a bad leg and forcing a fumble by an Aub player about to score, which then was recovered at the 1 yard line by the Auburn player. They then ran down the clock and kicked the gw FG. Thrashed then #3 LSU in the SEC Championship and then got outplayed by WVU in the Sugar Bowl (held in Atlanta due to Katrina).

The year LSU lost to Alabama in the NC game was embarrassing and Ed O’s meteoric fall after 2019

I would submit 2000 for worst collapse though. State beat both SEC Championship participants mid season and had three chances to wrap up Atlanta and lost all three. At least they were close. Two overtime losses to Arkansas and LSU and then to Ole Miss. Watched Auburn lose to Florida in SEC Champ game. State held Auburn without a first down through three quarters and beat the shite out of Florida.
If I’m not mistaken, State controlled their own destiny going into the last two games and then proceeded to lose both of them. That Arkansas game in the sleet was brutal. Hadn’t lost a home game in three years and then proceeded to blow a 10 point lead to lose to a then 4-5 Arkansas team. Had multiple field goals blocked or botched if I recall.
We were pretty much out of it for the West after that but the Egg Bowl still sucked. State went up 16-0 then OM finished the game on a 45-14 run. State was playing a backup freshman QB most of the night because Wayne Madkin had like a 102 fever and couldn’t give us much.

The 2009-10 basketball team without a doubt. Started the season 17-0 and ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history. Promptly went 7-10 over their last 17 games and got bounced in the first round as an 8-seed in the tournament.
Honestly, each of Rick Barnes' last 6 seasons at Texas, or just about all of Shaka Smart's seasons at Texas, qualify for this.

Jesus. NFL players all over the roster. A very good QB in his 4th year in the system. A relatively weak east division.
Beat UF and UGA and somehow dumbass Butch still manages to fumble the east.
All we had to do to go to the SECC game was beat 5-7 South Carolina. Didnt. Then all we had to do to go to the sugar bowl was beat 5-7 Vandy. Didnt.

Got to be 2014 Auburn. We were #2 in the nation in early November.

I’m an A&M fan. We live for disappointment.

Two things I remember from that game, besides the fact it was the coldest I had ever been at a game, including a -20 windchill game.
State guy intercepted the ball and had an easy pick6. Ran several steps with the ball and just ran OOB untouched.
State was lined up to run a play with like 10 or 20 seconds before the half at the 1 or 2 yard line, and the ref stood over the ball the whole time and wouldn't let State run the play, and the clock ran out.
Game went into OT 10-10. Getting either chance would have likely won the game for State.

Lol no - Ole Miss was definitely not ranked at any point that year.
ETA: The first ever playoff rankings had 1. MS State
2. Florida State
3. Auburn
4. Ole Miss

South Carolina is legendary for the 1984 collapse against Navy, but 1987 + 2007 are pretty close as well.

Not sure Arkansas has been good enough to collapse since 2006 and Houston Nutt. Maybe the 2012 (I think) season when they were ranked 3rd before being spanked by Bama and LSU.
Unless you lose games you should win it can’t be a collapse…our collapses were against the likes of Toledo , Colorado State and Liberty,
Hopefully those days are over.

We only lost 16-12.

Probably 2014 for Ole Miss. Last year was fool's gold because of a weak schedule. The 2014 team was actually very good with some great wins but very thin and they were the walking dead by the end of the year. Ole Miss winning the Egg Bowl that year is absolutely mystifying.
