Another loss to Georgia this year is totally unacceptable to me.

Georgia and LSU are 1a 1b for me.

Have to beat them. Have to beat Bama only if 9 wins are achievable because #thestreak

2 SEC losses or less is probably a great season, 3 losses is okay (but won’t do Gus any favors if the losses are to Alabama, UGA, and LSU), 4 losses keeps his job.

Losing record in the SEC and things are getting really dicey

They are getting harder and harder to beat. The recruiting job the Kirby is doing is amazing. They have more 5 star kids walking the sidelines than we have had in 10 years.

He is doing a good job of coaching as well. I think we are going to need some dynamic things to happen if we are going to play with them consistently. Kirby has locked down the 4th best recruiting state.

I quit having expectations, so it’s difficult for me to say what a successful season is. I suppose, however, you beat the teams you are supposed to beat, and try and take at least 2 of 3 among LSU, Georgia and Bama.

Thinking about it a bit more and having a 2017 type of season would be great. Without the last two losses of course.

Bump. Interesting thread to revisit now that we're done with the regular season.

Realistically it needs to be a 9 win season IMO with a potential 10 with the bowl game.

The schedule is absolutely brutal, which is why most think Malzahn would be safe with 7-8 wins, but that would still be disappointing. This roster is very talented. 9 wins at least to be a "successful" year.

Quoting myself.

In the most Malzahn way possible, we had a successful year. It truly is sad how special this year could have been if we had gotten out of our own way.

Finish the season strong, rather than with a whimper. End the year looking like a team that will compete next season. That means likely winning one of UGA/Bama and winning a good bowl game.

If those things happen I'd be pretty pleased with 9 wins in the regular season and 10 overall.

Play entertaining football where you're not constantly saying "why the hell is he doing that?"

We accomplished some of what I wanted. We certainly questioned Gus throughout the year, with good reason. I can't say that I think what happened against Bama says much about 2020 (maybe it does about Bo). We didn't play very entertaining football.

But we won 9 with a chance at 10, and hopefully the groundwork put in will show up next year. I view this as year 1 in a three year evaluation of whether Gus should be coach at Auburn beyond 2021.

Yep, they bailed Gus out in the end once again.

Without those two defensive touchdowns he looses to all our rivals. Same as with the kick six they made him look stellar against Saban. If Jimmy Sexton is half smart he'll be pushing GM to anyone who'll listen, because 2 out of last 3 against Saban is as high as his stock can go. He'll probably never have the chance to market him and pocket as much for himself.

I'd settle for no scratch your head what's wrong with the O games this season.

Well, that didn't happen. I also said in another thread I'd take 9-3. I honestly thought the win would be UF not bama.

Looking back on the season, and thinking about my original statement, and I think we likely had a successful season. I think I had us at 8-4 going into the season, which doesn’t mean we win 2 out of the 3. We still didn’t win 2 out of the 3, but going 9-3 with a freshman QB and one of, if not the most, difficult schedules is very good.

It was just frustrating watching us lose the games we lost—Georgia the most.

My opinion of my opinion.

“I want to see a cohesive plan.”
At times we looked organized especially on defense. I’m not sure exactly what our offensive identity is even after 12 games. We do have playmakers.

“If every first down is followed by a quick inside zone, I’ll still watch but only because AU football is something my son enjoys watching as well.”
Gus did not worship the inside zone as much as in the past.

“I’d also like to see entire field used in passing game instead of 283 screen passes.
0-10 yards, 11-20 yards, and over 21 yard passes should be thrown to left, right, and middle.”
Most of our passes were outside of the numbers. We rarely utilized the middle of the field. We did not run as many bubbles and tunnels as last year.

I would like to see us compete in every game. All losses should be 8 points or less.

“I would like us to limit turnovers and penalties on offense. I would like to see us organized and not have to use timeouts before end of half or game. “
We are not a heavily penalized team. We use timeouts too quickly in first half at times.

“I would like us to tackle well and create turnovers. “
Mission accomplished for the most part.
Proud of the defense.

“I want to see a good kicking game. “
Mixed bag, but decent overall.

“The wins will come if we do the above. “
9-3 with no blowout losses is a good year. No bonus or salary increase because I expect the fifth highest coach in the country to win at least 75% of games.

The little things make a difference. This season was still a little bittersweet, but this helped.

HAHa Gus always puts memorable wins on the schedule. Beating Bama at home consistently is worth a lot of money. Makes for a joyous end to a football season.

If our fresh qb makes one or two plays against UF, UGa - we would be the back door ship team. Those games were ours if a player or two would make a play. All went down to back end of 4qtr

He was that close to getting final 4 with a fresh qb

In general, I am pleased that we won 9 games.

Some great moments.
Some not so great moments.

If Bo plays at a higher level over the next few years, I believe we could win a championship.

This team really never developed a high end running game which made it difficult to have wide open play action passes.

I’m for Auburn and therefore I want Gus to be successful. I want him to have the sort of success that reflects his 49 million dollar contract.

I hope we guessed right and paid him early.

Time will tell.

My standards are the same as they are every year:

1. Look like we are well prepared.

1. Outside of the first half of the UGa game, I'd say we came pretty close to this standard once the season got going. We looked a little out of sync early against Oregon and Tulane but seemed to get it together in the second half of both of those games. The offense, as usual, took awhile to get on the same page, but the defense always looked ready to play, even if the end results were less than optimal.
quote:

2. Play up to our ability in every game, regardless of opponent.
I think overall we accomplished this, again with the caveat that we took a little while to get going early on. The two exceptions were Ole Luke and UGa.
quote:

3. Improve quality of play as the season progresses.
Gonna have to give us a failing grade on this one. Sure, we looked pretty good on offense at times against the tougher teams on our schedule, but there was zero consistency, even against lesser opponents like Arky (remember that 17-minute stretch where we gained <20 yards and had zero points on 3 consecutive possessions).

Bottom line, I predicted 8-4, with losses to the big 3 plus one of Oregon/TAMU/UF. The Bama win was a nice surprise to finish off the year, so I'll consider the season a qualified success, already the 3rd best performance of the Gustav Era.

Still not happy that we are paying a top 5 salary for ~8 wins a season, but IIWII. Plus, as Lanier has frequently pointed out, it's not my money.

Oh my goodness. You can honestly say that you were not entertained by the Iron Bowl? Fog, I think your standards for entertainment are a bit high. :)

Gus had 2 WTF games this year like most years, Florida and UGA were the games that we looked inept on the offensive side of the ball. Gus is going to Gus so expect that type of games yearly and he usually pulls a WTF bowl game, that remains to be seen.
