EAST ALABAMA. (WBRC) - One person has died after a fall during a police chase near Noccalula Falls Wednesday night.
According to Gadsden Police, the department’s street crimes and narcotics unit was conducting an investigation that led to a vehicle pursuit.
Officials say the pursuit ended at the campground at Noccalula Falls by driving around the gate to enter the campground.
“They were trying any and everything to avoid our officers and eventually this is just where the pursuit terminated,” Gadsden Police say.
After the pursuit ended, officials two people exited the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, police say, was taken into custody “after a fight”.
The passenger of the vehicle, according to authorities, ran about 20 yards before jumping over a fence while fleeing and fell 60 feet to the bottom of a gorge.
“At that point, our priority changes to a life saving situation. So, we begin to send our units down there while to try and help preserve life while activating all the other emergency units that we possibly could. Our units got down there, they did what they could for the individual, and they passed it over to Gadsden Fire from there,” officials say.
