Maybe just wishful thinking but why would Steele go to a struggling program to rebuild a bad defense when he can coach a good Auburn defense who is recruiting well.

Because the difference between a HC salary and a DC salary in the SEC is significant.

I mean if UT hires Steele as a HC that is the dumbest shite ever. Especially if it comes down to Venables and Steele.

True. But there’s lot of pressure that comes with being a HC at a Power 5 school like UT rebuilding...at his age I would think can be a big factor. He has way less pressure as our DC. He’s already making $1MM. That’s a frick ton of money. If he thinks another $5M is worth being the HC at UT with all things considered then okay, assuming he’s being offered the job. Just think it’s more likely that he stays put.

Maybe it’s just my wishful thinking but Steele has always struck me as the kind of DC that is happy with just being a DC the rest of his coaching career. I don’t think he really wants to embark on another head coaching adventure.

What do y’all think? Just wishful thinking?

From the beginning, it seems he has been pushing for the UT job.

Man I hope he stays. Our defense finally has stability.

I think that being the head coach of his alma mater is probably one of the few jobs he would leave AU for

He was a candidate for the USA job before we hired Joey, but his agent wanted 7 years and Gottfried refused to give more than 5.

He contacted us about the USA opening again after Joey announced retirement, but withdrew from consideration once all this shite started going down at UT.

Take it fwiw

I could really see him doing this. He doesn't seem to have an ego problem and really seems to love Auburn.

Lance Thompson would work for me. The guys seemed to like him and played well for him in the 2015 bowl game.

I can’t imagine the TN fan base reaction to a Kevin Steele head coaching announcement. The dude is a great assistant, but isn’t a head coach.

I have been overwhelmingly amazed at Steele’s defense he’s built at AU but I just don’t see him as a HC. UT needs to go after a heavily offensive minded coach to get some quick remedy on offense. In the meantime they can look for a DC to compliment their offense. Their biggest issues are the offense. I think you can replace a DC a lot easier than an OC.

I don't think it matters who UT hires, Fat Phil is going to be the defacto HC.

It is absolutely crazy to think he is interviewing not once, but twice if he doesn't intend to take it if offered. This isn't Gus using arkie to posture for what he wants.

Steele was the head coach at Baylor University from 1999 to 2002. His record was 9–36 (1–31 in the Big 12 conference). In Steele's first season (1999), Baylor finished with a 1–10 record (the school's worst since 1969). During the 1999 season, Steele's Baylor team was involved in what ESPN.com called one of the top 10 worst coaching decisions. The decision came when he chose a running play rather than a kneel down with Baylor leading and possessing the ball in the game's final 12 seconds and their opponent, the UNLV Rebels, was out of time outs. The ensuing Baylor fumble and UNLV return for a touchdown gave the Rebels a shocking win.

Some supposed insider on Tennessee 247 is claiming it's come down to Tucker & Pruitt. We will see....

Would love to see Tucker take the job & poach some guys off Kirby's staff. Need a little turmoil over there

I’m glad we have Steele over Tucker or Pruitt, but both are comparable DC’s and both are younger
