I still doubt UT will hire Steele, but this year anything is possible, so we might as well start thinking about potential replacements.
I'd be happy if we could lure TRob back from SCarolina. Took them from the bottom of the SEC to respectable these past couple of years, although the complete lack of offense in the SEC East other than UGa was a big part of that.
Who else might we consider?

whatever we do....keep Travis Williams for as long as possible

T-Rob would be interesting. Would definitely be a boost to our DB recruiting which really has been lead by Steele. Guys like Brown but it's been Steele that has nailed things down with guys like Tutt & Monday. T-Rob could carry that load too if he came on board
No doubt Gus would either look at promoting from within (I don't think Garner is interested in being a DC tho) or going to find another Muschamp/Steele tree member. It's clear we have found a defensive system that works best for us
Here's to hoping that Tennessee's incompetence doesn't frick us up

I’ll pass on Rocker.
Something is off with him, to me. He was fired by UGA and agreed to sign something that would terminate the rest of his owed salary if he talked about the dismissal.
Is that strange to anyone else?

Kevin Steele misses Broyles Award events; in mix at Tennessee (247)
quote:
Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is a finalist for the Broyles Award, which will be presented to the nation's top assistant coach Tuesday in Little Rock, Ark. But he's not there and won't be there.
Steele missed a function Monday night and was due to arrive this morning, but he sent word to event organizers that he would not be able to attend because of a job interview.
That interview appears to be with Tennessee. Tennessee athletics director Phillip Fulmer is in New York City, where many of the nation's top coaches and administrators have gathered for the annual National Football Foundation's annual awards dinner, Dawgs247 reported Monday is also interviewing Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker. There could be others.
Steele has been prominently metioned in speculation about the Tennessee search for a replacement for Butch Jones that has been controversial almost from the start.
Former athletics director John Currie reached an agreement with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, only to withdraw it after a flood of protests on social media. Currie eventually was let go and replaced by Fulmer, who as head coach, led Tennessee to the 1998 national championship.
A former Tennessee player, Steele has resurrected Auburn's defense the past two seasons and is immensely popular with players and with Auburn fans.
Central Florida offensive coordinator Troy Walters, also a Broyles finalist, arrived Tuesday morning after missing Wednesday night's fucntion. He interviewed for the UCF head coachig job that Scott Frost will vacate to take over at Nebraska. Walters, who is not expected to get the job, arrived in Little Rock for the awards luncheon.
USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, the quarterback on Tennessee's national championship team, has also been mentioned as candidate, along with Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt.

Outside of it being Auburn, what lure does the DC position have for TRob?
He is already DC (at least in name) at USC
He is working under his mentor
Unless he wants to be a coordinator in his own right and out from under Muschamp, or Auburn will pay and SC won't, I don't see him leaving.
I also don't see Rocker getting offered. I don't think Auburn would be willing to be the guinea pig and let his first job as DC be with us.

Getting out from under Muschamp, pay, and better talent... that's all I got.

- better Jimmys and Joes on the team
- an opportunity to branch out on his own (as has been elsewhere rumored)
- ability to recruit to a school in the middle of a recruiting hotbed that also happens to be his alma mater
- probably more money

I think branching out would be the big appeal. Come home to your alma mater & run the defense on your own for more money. Gives him a chance to prove he's more than just Muschamp's right hand man & could help eventually land head coaching gig
Not saying it will be easy to convince him but I think there's a valid reason why he would take the job

I can’t imagine the TN fan base reaction to a Kevin Steele head coaching announcement. The dude is a great assistant, but isn’t a head coach.

Steele’s approach at auburn has really been effective.... he’s more loose and letting his players have fun.
I’m not sure that would translate all that well to a head coaching position at a make P5 program.

I hate to bring logic into these fantasy scenarios...but
Didn't T-Rob leave because he wasn't offered the DC job and seemed pissed about it on his way out of town? We still have Gus.
Not to mention it's hard to imagine taking a coordinator who is working under his mentor away from another SEC job even if what already happened in 2015 didn't happen.
Didn't Champ and T-Rob have concerns with Gus' administrative approach to running the program?

No on T-Rob. I dont want the Muschamp D anywhere near Auburn. That bend not break defense is awful.

IIRC, we wanted him to stay on as DC after 2015, but he chose to follow WM to USCe.
