Saban was right when he talked about the top 4 and other bowls becoming meaningless.
Outback bowl is good reward for our 8-4 season but no shot Burks should play in it or the top PSU WR Dotson.
These elite guys are a few months away from life/generational changing money and only bad things in the bowl game could change that.
Selfish entitled fans don't care about the individuals futures, they just want entertainment from a bowl game.

He is right but all these games are meaningless if I'm a high draft pick. I might as well just circle the games I want to play in. It is a bout setting a good example but the game is being ruined anyway and so it doesn't matter.

It isn't really just "scared of getting hurt". They are worried about losing out on alot of money that could possibly really help their family in certain situations.

Treylon who? Warren Thompson is fixing to eat.

So what is the point of playing the season then? The NY6 bowls and the playoffs are just as meaningless. Get hurt in those and you will lose out on millions.
Exactly. I mean every game is meaningless if we want to get philosophical about it. Why is a bowl game that much more meaningless than a regular season game between .500 teams?
Seems like the logical conclusion of this trend would be that you just play in enough games to showcase your talent and opt out the rest

I don't blame anyone for opting out but it will happen in the playoffs as well. Money talks.
I believe you will see more players opt out during the season as well because a high draft prospect has nothing to gain playing the whole year.

That’s over a month difference between Mizzou game and Bowl. He needs to be healthy for combine as that’s where he will make a jump up the board
I’m glad he has smart people around him…I’m sure Pittman agrees with his decision.
Heluva Hog!

Sam preaches Arkansas. The people he’s preaching to believe a homegrown guy will want to kick the teeth in of any team that he plays while wearing the Hog. Money has taken over everything. It’s just a different time.

I don’t even watch NFL and some of these takes are embarrassing

Has it happened yet? The playoffs have been here for 4 years and don’t recall it happening at all.
What is so different now?
This has been happening for a while. Dmac basically opted out of the cotton bowl if memory serves me.

He “played” but not really. They were not about to go all out because they were about to get that wood. They didn’t have anything to prove anyways after beating #1 LSU at their house.

Burks opting out sucks in the sense that I'd love to watch him play in an Arkansas uniform one more time
It's absolutely the right decision, though, from a standpoint of personal finance and career trajectory. He's worked extremely hard for a very long time, and he's about to see the payoff. He has a ton of potential. He proved what he needed to prove during the regular season. Now he's looking after his future. That's the right thing to do.
I'm looking forward to seeing how well the other WRs step up. A lot of those guys now have a great opportunity to compete for reps.

He played but when Nutt got fired, lost the desire to play.

This.
More often than not, the "common narrative" is very wrong. The common narrative for opting out was that it would show how selfish players are, but it showed how selfish many fans are.
Anybody here looking at the difference in $10-20mm guaranteed, or a freak injury that would make your future draft potential completely in question, would think it was a no brainer.
Burks makes even more sense, since his stress fracture simply needs rest. It's not even the bowl game that's the issue, its the month of practice beforehand.
On top of that, lets all be honest here. Darren and Felix should have opted out of the Cotton Bowl. They were clearly playing in self preservation. If they would've actually opted out, then the god forsaken game plan we had would've been to utilize backs that were playing harder. So opting out, if your hearts not in it, is best for the team. Not saying that would be Burks, but its another factor that makes too much sense for him to opt out.

Yeah the takes by some of our fans are embarrassing. The dudes been a great representative for our state and Razorback football, one of the most loyal dudes who could’ve played for anybody including bama and chose to stay home to wear the hog, stuck it out through the morris years when he could’ve hit the portal, told OU to go frick themselves when they tried to poach him before this season, fought through numerous injuries this year, that lesser dudes with his draft potential might would’ve milked and used as an excuse to sit out *cough Leonard fournette , Jadeyveon clowney cough*, and now after giving us one of the greatest single seasons in Razorback history is going to do what’s best for him, get healthy for the draft, and go make life changing money for him and his family. Let’s applaud the kid and encourage him to be a great ambassador for the school which I’m sure he will be.

Extremely well said.

Burks can skip the bowl and have a season ending injury in his first game as a pro.
Very true. And if he does he'll have a signed professional contract and medical insurance that more than covers literally anything that could happen to him.
Better that than getting hurt as an amateur in a bowl game that only exists to get the university some extra TV revenue.
