It's just the opting out in fear of a potential injury that bothers me

I guess we will never know but its hard to think it would just be this with how much he played hurt this year.

Probably best since he had the stress fracture in foot before season even started.

I just can't bring myself to accept the new attitude of opting out. Not that long ago you played for the team every game you could while you had the chance, doing otherwise was seen as abandoning your team.

So a bunch of redneck imbecile fans (me included) can root him on in a meaningless bowl?

One ugly hit or random play can cost him generational/life changing wealth for himself and his family. It literally happened to Greg Childs. Not same situation but its an example of how quickly it can all end for someone with that kind of talent.

That is a completely selfish mindset from a fan IMO, not the other way around.

And I can guarantee the entire team and coaches respect his decision. He played hurt almost the whole year.

If it were the playoff, that would be one thing but this game is more or less meaningless. Both teams get paid and both teams get the reps. W/L is more or less irrellevant if you look at it objectively.

Why not opt out the Mizzou game then? Or the Bama/LSU games for that matter? How were those games any more meaningful in the grand scheme? He was already a first rounder no matter what.

Where do you draw the line?

Again, not criticizing Burks specifically, especially if he needs surgery. I'm just talking generally about opt outs

I understand why he's doing it, but it still sucks.

To go further, should anyone with an NFL future be playing in the bowl game? Or in any game after you're eliminated from conference/playoff contention?

Again, not arguing about Burks specific situation

If you are a lock for a 1st round pick, probably not or at least I understand the logic

It obviously gets more complicated when you are talking about the vast majority of players

Everyone's situation is different money wise

Why would they not want to play? If you skip out on bowls then you will skip out on NFL games when out of playoff contention. That is no different than playing in the NFL, one season ending injury and that's it. You gotta play like it is your last game of your football career.

For real, a meaningless bowl or $300,000 game checks... Not quite the same.

Yeah, I can get some of the arguments about when does it make sense to opt out of college

NFL is a different animal

I don't consider going 8-4 and going to the Outback a meaningless bowl.

Burks can skip the bowl and have a season ending injury in his first game as a pro. Playing football is a big risk anyway and no one should be scared of getting hurt. Football should be fun and everything else is a distraction.

After years of sucking arse in football we finally have a legit star that is opting out of a meaningless bowl game.

And since he's opting out after playing injured the whole fricking season he's now not your favorite hog.

In that situation though he is still making some good guaranteed money from his rookie contract

It would be cool if the world worked that way but it just doesn't and never will

"Fans" are really getting butthurt over him opting out of a bowl game? JEeeeezus.

I mean, I understand wishing he was playing and getting to see him on the field as a Hog one more time, but not respecting his decision and thinking less of him because of it is just... living in a different reality from modern athletes.

He is but no one should be scared of getting hurt, that is the point. If you are scared of getting hurt then don't play the game. Yes but some like playing the game and don't want to miss out an opportunity for a so called meaningless bowl. College is a bout enjoying the moment but the NFL is a job.

Not sure if this directed at me? I fully support Burks on this. He’s played his arse off and has been beat to hell, and we’ve ridden him hard.

I just hate that damn practice field and the litany of broken feet it’s caused.

Seriously dude?

It's a $10-$20M signing bonus on the line.

That could vanish if he gets hurt. You don't know his situation and the amount he has to lose vs you getting to see him play in one more game.

Don't give me that Bud Kilmer BS about the love of the game and putting it on the line for the team only to possibly wind up losing that and working at a local car dealership instead.

Your stance is ridiculous.

Completely understand his decision but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
