Of course we are “selfish” (not really the right word since it isn’t actually benefiting the fans personally, but we’ll roll with it)
If not we’d want every basketball recruit to sign with Kentucky or every football recruit to sign with Alabama or some elite status program. Hell, Matt Cassel got drafted by being a career backup at USC when they were in their prime. Clearly was the best move for a player, get the most nfl exposure for the least risk. But I’ll be damned if we wouldn’t have wanted kids signing with Arkansas over USC at the time.
We’re all selfish. Would any Arkansas fan give a damn about Burks if he had signed with some other school? Or even if he played 2 years here then transferred? We’re just talking about a spectrum of how much loyalty a player has to show before a given person is willing to wish them well.
Most people (myself included) think Burks has shown plenty, but I reserve the right to criticize opt outs especially for non injured players (I don’t think this fits Burks specific situation)

Speaking of selfish Marcus Monk is almost universally hated by the fanbase even though he played 4 full years of football for us, some basketball too. Because he sent his brother to Kentucky (almost undeniably the college choice with the most likely successful outcome for him).

Point is, calling out fans for being selfish with regard to opting out late in a career is some cherry-picking-arse posting

No sir. I love Burks - as I've said wish nothing but the best for him. Hope he gets picked #1 overall (unless he could somehow fall to KC)

I like Marcus. He represented us well in two sports. The whole bank account thing and it being reported were ridiculous

Same. Whatever happened there, I never liked the fact that it overshadowed what he did as a hog in most people's minds

These bowls were already pointless to play in before the playoffs were a thing. It began when they added all these bowls which further diluted the traditional bowls that have been in place for decades. I remember Shawn Andrews made an excuse that he had problems with his nose and didn't play in the Independence bowl. Was it true? No one knows but it was seen as a waste of time. The BCS probably had to do with it.
People say that players will never opt out of the playoffs but never say never. It will happen but we just don't know when. Then people will bitch and moan that the playoffs aren't meaningless and that player quit on the team. The same people will get over it and say that was a smart move and indeed the playoffs are a big risk for a potential first rounder. Next potential high draft picks will see that playing the whole season might be a big risk and so if they happen to get hurt such as a small injury, they will try opt out of games as much as possible.
Expanding the playoffs makes it more tempting for players to opt out as the more games you play the higher risk of injury. The NIL doesn't help either as it just encourages more players to not play these games even players who aren't on any draft boards.

The only use in bowls is to get practice for kids next year and maybe improve betweeners stock, but most of that shite is done at the combine.
It really is just to sucker fans into traveling and spending money in an area. Should change it to bowl games at the higher ranked teams stadium. Make it a 60/40 ticket split for 1-2 weeks then a free for all until the tickets are gone. Then home teams could use that for bringing in recruits.

If I want to be warm in the winter, I can plan a trip to the Bahamas or Belize… why do I want to spend that shite in lovely Tampa?

Hate to see Burks go but he was an idiot if he played the bowl. He could be a combine freak. The smallest signing bonus for a first rounder is still hundreds of years of median income for his home town. I mean unless he already hates his future kids why take a chance of screwing up their future.

If we believe that these bowls are a waste of time then they need to get rid of most of them. It use to be that you need to win nine games to go to any bowl that are worth the trouble. Now we have G5 schools that go 6-6 and go bowling. It wasn't like that before. But is it really worth it going to these bowls that might actually cost the school more money than the payout itself? With rising inflation that might cause them to turn down some of these invites.
Also some of these bowls that are in Florida are expensive and fanbases aren't created equal in finances. Big 10 teams travel well because they treat it as a vacation while hog fans don't travel well. They are conditioned to go to warm bowls and so they save and plan. Arkansas fans expect bowls that are close like the Liberty each year. I expect a crowd of 70/30 in favor of Penn State.

That signing bonus is him buying up large plots of land for his family and a home when he retires.

I don’t think they are a waste, I think they are a waste for 1st round nfl talent that isn’t in the playoffs. I think the travel is stupid. Have the games at home and part of the perks package could be Outback paying for a week of hotels for the athletes on Spring Break in Tampa or Miami.

The problem is they can still view the playoffs as a waste of time. It really is if the player is in it one hundred percent for the money. But not all are as some will not be drafted.
Yes they do need to have games at home or have bowls closer so that these fans can travel better and spend more money in these areas.

If a first rounder sits for non medical reason in the playoffs, they won’t be a first rounder anymore, assuming it’s the athletes decision.

Just don’t know who gets excited about traveling to Memphis in December/January or Tampa in January. If you really want to show off your area, give the whole team a trip to Miami in March on Spring Break, sell it to fans as getting to hang out with players then. Otherwise you don’t really get to see the players no access, just taking a trip to a slightly warmer area.

I can imagine circumstances where there could be two players at the same position that a team rates roughly equally, and one plays and the other doesn't. Then maybe the teams go with the one who played. But outside that kind of scenario, I can't imagine it's that big of a deal
IMO this kind of thing will be normalized going forward now that more players are doing it

This is mostly what I’m saying and every team tries to talk every other person into Olave over Burks or Vice versa.. I’m saying it could drop a between person not a McFadden top 3 lottery pick.
