Absolutely. If you don’t feel in your heart of hearts that some replacement-level or worse offense is going look unstoppable running the same thing over and over against us, then you just don’t have a feel for Bama defenses of late. I can hear the “well, they were doing a bunch of stuff we didn’t plan for” explainer already… Fun times. But don’t worry, that means the defense finding its groove is almost here.

As long as we have Pete Golding, we will underachieve defensively. While I will continue to be a hardcore BAMA fan, I accepted a long time ago he can only be so good of a coach.

We will have games where we look great defensively, but you can count on 1-2 games where we look totally lost on the field, like we did not have any interest whatsoever in practicing that week. The best he can do is to field a unit that can provide enough stops to let the offense get far enough ahead that it makes the other team’s offensive play calling predictable. I get so frustrated about him I honestly probably need to avoid even discussing him.

I get the feeling Saban isn't taking much shite off the coaches this season. Saban calling last season's team a rebuild says a lot coming from him. Saban believes this is a championship team and I'm sure he expects to lose some coaches off this team once the season is over. If the defense is disappointing and injuries aren't a factor I can see Saban giving the reigns to Charles Kelly during the season.

Texas is definitely gonna score twice in the final 5 minutes to cut it to 10 or so just to piss us all off

People on here that think Charles Kelly is better than Pete Golding are in for a rude awakening if that change ever happens. God almighty

I'm sure it will take half a season for everyone to stop busting assignments.

Biggest worry is that the offense won't be able to bail is out early this year. Our offensive line was absolutely abysmal going into fall. Need a miracle worker there to make me feel confident in the offense next year

Yea that sounds like a fart in the wind. Charles Kelly is a great recruiter and seems to do a decent enough job as a position coach. Charles Kelly was a horrid DC.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I believe Texas could be somewhat of a test for our defense. Sarkisian knows how to scheme guys open with the best of them. They may go right down the field on us with the opening script but I believe we will settle in and they will eventually have a hard time with our pass rush.

It will help to have someone coaching the position this year.

That’s the way I look at it. Texas’ schemes will expose some areas that we will need to improve and fix, which should be really beneficial for the rest of the season. Sark will put up some points, around 24 I’m guessing, but it won’t be near enough to win. I see us putting up somewhere between 48-52. Out O line will be better this year. Not dominant, I don’t think, but good enough.

Will you edit this thread to be the "Fire Pete Golding" thread when needed?

The success of this defense will really depend on three things:

1) Staying healthy.

2) Someone on the DL blossoming into a run stopper.

3) How soon the secondary gels and matures.

We all know Anderson is otherworldly but if he gets hurt our pass rush is just average to good instead of great.

Someone on the DL needs to step up and dare to be dominant.

The last several years the issues with the secondary are obvious much discussed. Saban's secondary packages are the most complex there is. Let's hope the communication is much improved.

I agree with others tho. This group has a chance to be special.

I just hope it doesn't have injuries. Seems like we've had at least one key linebacker hurt in camp/early in the season every year for the last 5-6 years.

to be honest, we've had 1-2 games where the defense was arse pretty much every season since Saban has been at Bama. It didn't start with Golding.

Rules of the game have changed in modern football. Everything is geared to protect QB’s & WR’s now. Ronnie Lott & Steve Atwater would be ejected every game. D.Thomas & L.Taylor also.

WR’s still the rocked over the middle sometimes, but nothing like it used to be. Basically got a small window to nail a QB now.
