I will say B today with potential for better. He seems to have the “it” factor and from all indications is a teacher of the game, something we definitely needed

Bama has the money and name
Bama does not have a big name in basketball. Maybe 30 years ago we did coming off the Wimp and Newton years, but not anymore, and our coliseum is among the worst in the league.
That doesn't mean we can't lure a big name hire in the right situation(similar to Crean to UGA last year), but our target will always be a mid-major guy looking to make a step up until we solidify ourselves as an annual tourney team.

I mean, you are ranking it based off the criteria used to make the hire.
He doesn't have a long career, no P6 experience, largely unknown.
But, he seems to be able to talk the game we want to hear, and to me that is very important.
So, comparing him to a high school recruit, I'd say he's like a 4 star from a middle sized 3A high school that just started playing football his sophomore year.

Yep - I'd agree with that general sentiment. Raw materials seem to be there, but we won't really know until he's thrown into the fire.

D
Laughable that all our rivals can hire big name basketball coaches and we get stuck with mid major garbage. Pitiful.

Can we ban the troll accounts? I'm too old to argue with them, but too dumb not to respond.

So is it the 82% winning percentage in the last 2 seasons, blowout tourney win against Arizona in 2018, blowout tourney win against Arizona State in 2019, or the Nick Saban-like competitive attitude that makes him “garbage”?

Anthony Grant beat Duke. Some good that did. Our program is trending down while everyone else in the SEC that is a meaningful program is trending up. That is just reality.

How exactly am I trolling?
Bless your little heart. I want to win again as much as anyone. We shouldn’t be relegated to having to hire mid major coaches while our rivals who don’t even have the basketball tradition we do can hire big names and start making Sweet 16’s. If that is trolling then so be it.

Oats is from Wisconsin, that state doesn't produce bad coaches.

Dude, Auburn got Pearl on a big discount because of his past, not to mention they got lucky on timing.

I like what I've read about his coaching philosophy (and really, if we weren't getting someone like, idk, Tony Bennett or a mega-high stature coach with some other type of battle-proven system, I think we pretty much had to shoot for a pace and efficiency guy; a lesser-known with a plodding or even just kind of hard to pinpoint style would've been a disaster), but "crapshoot" is putting the success rate of guys like Oats coming to schools like Bama in probably kinder than reality terms. You can pretty much throw out what you think about how what he's done so far will translate to what he will do for us and just cross your fingers.
On the off-the-court, program-building front, there's really too much that's dependent on things other than a HC to even begin to predict how he'll do there, but I like that he seems to be a hard-driving, intense personality. One of the brand name guys could've had the Bama name buzzing from the start, but if we're going for a guy that'll have to build it up from the bottom, I'd rather have an Oats type than, say, a Grant type.
So, maybe a B or B-. I like the style and their are definitely plenty of encouraging things about him, but the success rate on hires like this is just so so low, and, honestly, I would've really liked to see us land (and maybe think we'll eventually have to have) someone a little more jawdropping.

B+, I think in a few years it will turn out to be an A+.

I knew you’d love the hire just based on where he’s from.

The only concern I have is him becoming the next Andy Enfeld (sp)? The current HC at Southern California. Both brilliant guys who were HC at mid-majors.

Doesn’t matter how the barn got him they did it. They also built a brand new state of the art basketball arena something we refuse to do. Sickening that Auburn cares more about basketball than we do. Oats gets a mulligan from me for next season but the guy has his work cut out for him recruiting and coaching against guys like Pearl, Howland, Crean, Calipari, soon to be Buzz Williams, Barnes, etc.
It is a race we won’t win. Period.

Almost every guy you listed there was once a hot shot young new coach at a P5 school fresh from a mid major, and most of them won pretty quickly against old guard coaches. Hell, Pearl got his job at Tennessee basically from beating us in the NCAAT and he hit the ground and went beserk in year 1.
There is no guarantee Oats will be like that - it's a toss up, who knows. It's also silly to just assume he won't. Almost every good, established coach was at one time exactly what Oats is now.

Very true this statement. Further, Pearl was doing terrible at AU his first few seasons. At one point this very season, concerns about even making the NCAA tourney were real. BAsketball is very fickle and it's amazing what a 10 game winning streak at the right time can do for you.
Time will tell about Oats. Will he be committed to doing things the way he wants to do it and do it right? We'll see.
