A+ to F scale

Pros : Exciting style, well respected, great advanced analytic numbers in areas that we all complained about under the last regime, energetic and high energy

Cons : No Power 5 experience, took over a program that was already good, no experience in the Southeast, mid-major coaches are a crapshoot

Personally, I really wanted to hire someone who had fought the big conference wars before. Mid-major coaches scare me to death. However, if we were going to go the mid-major route, I think Oats is solidly in that first tier group of guys (I still would have preferred Forbes due to his P5 experience).

Definitely an upgrade from Avery, but there is a lot of risk and unknown out there that you just never can know about until the guy goes through the big conference grind for a few years.

My Grade : B

After Beard, he was my second (what I considered) reasonable choice. Solid A from me.

B+ with A+ potential.

If he makes a tourney in his first season - A+

1/2 - B+

Any sweet 16 in first 3 seasons A+

With the cleaned out roster he is about to inherit... especially if Kira leaves, I suspect that these are some crazy out of wack expectations.

For the same reasons as you, I'll say a it's a solid B+ hire. He looks great on paper, but mid majors are always a risk. But, it's high risk with the possibility of high reward.

As you reminded me in another thread, we've never hired a major conference experienced basketball coach. In light of the fact that we've not been successful in the past attracting such coaches, and assuming Byrne tested those waters and none of the big names were interested, then I think he did about as well as he could have...

"A" from me.

I'll give him an A+ if he just has a winning record in his first season.

B+

Pros: Very successful at Buffalo. Blew out both his NCAA first round opponents the past 2 years. Won his conference regular season the past 2 years and his conference tourney the past 2 years. Seemingly just gets better.

Cons: Unknown how he will do at a big program.

I think it's a good hire.

This is how I feel but I'd rate it as a B.

I'm not sure Nate Oats has ever been to Alabama...but he does have one SEC loss as Buffalo's Head Coach...at Texas A&M

Oats was 1-7 in regular season games vs. AP ranked teams.

He was 2-3 in NCAA Tournament games, taking Buffalo to the dance in 3 of 4 years as their head coach.

Solid B with a high ceiling.

I don’t think so. I think he convinces Kira to stay and Petty is 50/50.

A

No drama in the search, found a guy quick so it didn't drag out long, good, recent success in his league and tournament. Not sure what more we could have expected.

I’ll give him a B+. Before the hire, he was my 2nd choice behind the homerun hires being slightly edged out by Forbes. Main concern was it was difficult to grade the job he did at Buffalo when Hurley seemed to start the turn-around. But after hearing from the Buffalo fan on the Rant who credited him more for the turnaround with his recruiting as an assistant and Hurley picking his brain, it’s hard not to get excited.

B+

Definitely an upgrade. Has a great system and as far as I know is a great developer of talent.

Just have some questions about never being in the south or at a power conference school. Also the MAC isn’t known for turning out good power conference coaches so we will see

I'm pretty much right in line with Bird. I'd say B+ possibly A- if he comes in and convinces Kira & JP to stay.

Pros

His teams stay fairly balanced on both ends of the court. Looks like he is a solid coach in terms of development. Young but doesn't really act like it. Isn't afraid to challenge his players. Up tempo style of play which more teams are slowly moving towards. He has outperformed tournament expectations.

Cons

Some of these are very minor but potential concerns. Only 4 years as a D1 head coach. Don't think it matters too much, but doesn't have any experience in the Southeast. The only thing that I see that you can gripe about on the statically side is his teams don't shoot FTs well but I don't put much of that on the coach.

B+

Solid A
1:Love that his record was getting better each year.
59 wins last 2 years.
2:Uptempo, high octane, guard oriented offense.
3:Pressure man to man defense which creates turnovers.
4:Relentless recruiter
5:Back to back MAC coach of the year.
6:Won an NCAA tournament game last 2 years.

More than a coach has done at Bama in a long time.
