We shouldn’t be relegated to having to hire mid major coaches while our rivals who don’t even have the basketball tradition we do can hire big names
Nate Oats is a bigger name than Kermit Davis or Will Wade were when they were hired. Wade won the SEC Regular Season title this year and Davis won SEC Coach of the Year. Let’s stop acting like there’s no way this hire works out when the evidence it can is staring you right in the face.

I’ll go C+
Seems he was able to win in his former league with superior X’s and O’s. Can he fill out his staff with SEC quality assistants? Can he recruit? He doesn’t have to be top 10 year in year out, but he’s got to get the guys he prioritizes.
That said I love the passing metrics. He also appears to have the right charisma to connect with fan base and I trust our AD. Hopefully I’ll get to catch a full game next season.

The guy got Buffalo basketball...BUFFALO to #14 in the country.
He’s won at a .819 clip the past 2 years.
He destroyed his conference foes.
Buffalo has been to the Dance 4 times in their 100 year existence. Oates was an assistant on the first team and head coach for the other 3.
His KenPom offensive efficiency numbers are phenomenal.
He runs an uptempo offense that will be an easy sell to recruits.
He is hard-nosed, hardworking and blunt.
He’s a big Nick Saban fan.
He is something of a risk with the limited track record and no ties in the south but his ceiling is very high.
I’d rate this hire an A- with potential to revise to an A+ in time.

I'd give it A-. Watching their games, I like the offensive spacing and guard work. He's going to need several shooters to make it work. They look a lot like Auburn. Not a lot of height or inside post scoring. They are always tighter on D which creates turnovers but they give up a ton of shots around the rim. Their offside help defense could he better but I believe it's a little by design. It's a nicely designed system but we will struggle if we don't hit our threes. You can tell that he had guards with a lot of experience this year. They excel in EFFORT, transition, spacing and dribble drive. They struggle on the inside on both sides of the ball.
I think we will he happy with the results.

I give it an A-/B+
Pros: upside is through the roof which is where Bama should be going right now after late Gottfried, Grant, and Avery. Young, energetic, has won a tourney game the past two seasons
Cons: not from the southeast

I give it a B-. I like his style. I like his energy. He reminds me of Will Wade to be honest.
At the end of the day he's still just a mid major hire though. It's pretty much a coin flip.

C+. I like everything he has said so far but I’m not sold on a total of 4 years of head coaching experience in a dinky conference.

I rate it a B+. Oats is as pure of a basketball coach as Bama has had in a long, long time. I'm not concerned about his 4 years of college coaching experience. Chris Beard only has 4 years of D1 college experience, too and had we hired him some would still be fapping.
The guy is smart, blue-collar, demands effort and intensity, has a defined offensive and defensive philosophy. He isn't the largest name out there, but he brings all the qualities in a HC that Alabama has been missing since Wimp to be honest.
I leave my rating as a B+, because the unknowns are for sure that you truly never know how a guy will handle being given the keys to a bigger program like Alabama. We do have plenty of case precedence of former mid-major coaches flaming out when they get to a big school. But then you also have the Bruce Pearls.

A+++++. Anything is a big improvement from AJ.
Honestly don’t know much about the man, but he seems very excited to be here. His offense looks to be very energetic. We’ll see in 4yrs

Solid B with a chance to get to an A.
In addition to your points, I like that he has a system and we aren't going to try to go isolation with 4 guys standing around and 1 guy dribbling for 28 seconds.

Did y'all hear him propping Wimp and talking about Spree and Hory and watching them back in the day? That was pretty cool.

It's a C hire, and i'm unimpressed by the lack of wanting to spend big money considering the push for an "elite" or at least consistent NCAA tourney basketball program.
He has four years in the MAC but if you look at this years team they were essentially senior heavy, with mostly juniors behind them. In addition, not much big wins. Yeah, he beat Arizona but Arizona was trash in non conference play. They lost to NC State, SMU, and Purdue. They beat...nobody OOC outside of A&M. Plus the PAC 12 was an absolute dumpster fire last year. Don't really see much from a recruiting front but you never can with mid-majors.
I'm just surprised we didn't try to poach someone or even dip into the pockets heavily. Look at what the Saban hire did in terms of program revenue for football. Going out there and spending 4M+ a year +buyout on an established coach would've been a worthy gamble. We should've taken the same approach as Louisville with Chris Mack.
Hell, I would've taken a gamble on Sean Miller. His buyout is absurdly low right now.

B-
I’ll try to hopeful but it wouldn’t be shocking if he had around the same success as Grant
Probably be an unpopular opinion but I kind of agree. I thought they would go for the big hire too. Especially when a team like AU probably going to the elite 8.

Again, UA football to UA basketball is a really bad comparison.
And I think we often forget how important it is for AD’s to be realistic in these searches. Sure, on the surface, it seems like a great idea to check with Donovan, then Izzo, then Beard, then Matta, etc etc and make all these guys say no. But when you dig a little deeper, receiving 4-5 denials is pretty bad for the perception of the job.
I’m personally very happy with the way Byrne handled it and how he arrived at his guy.
